“Day of the Dead” Season Finale ‘Choke On ‘Em’ Recap: The Best Bait is Live Bait

In SYFY’s Day of the Dead finale episode, “Choke On ‘Em”, the ratio of surviving humans to walking dead is severely leaning to the advantage of the zombies. Luckily for Mawinhaken (and the outside world), the few humans that are still alive got a whole hell of a lot of grit left in them. Can the gang keep the zombie virus from spreading beyond their rural Mawinhaken town?

Massacre at PayMart | Sarah (Morgan Holmstrom), Lauren (Natalie Malaika), Paula (Miranda Frigon), Luke (Daniel Doheny), and Cam (Keenan Tracey) arrive to PayMart to find that the front doors of the makeshift crisis center aren’t sealed anymore. Inside, a massacre has taken place and the only survivor is Amy (Kristy Dawn Dinsmore).

Cleargenix had come through earlier and killed everyone in their path in an attempt to rid the town of zombies and any evidence that may tie Cleargenix to the outbreak. Little did the gang know, Rhodes (Kevin O’Grady) is still lurking in the shadows. Rhodes takes Amy hostage, but when a zombie Captain Pike (Marci T. House) lunges at Rhodes him, the gang is able to knock him out and take him into custody.

Taking Rhodes on the Road | Together, the team of survivors come up with a plan to lure all the zombies they can to a drill site in a rural location on the outskirts of Mawinhaken. The bait? Rhodes. After all, the best bait is live bait. Rhodes is strapped to the back of Bobby Hart’s (Matty Finochio) tow truck and encouraged to yell in panic, which is an easy task considering a horde of hungry undead are coming out of the woodworks to see what the fuss is all about. Unfortunately, the truck stalls in the middle of zombie suburbia, and Cam falls off the back of the truck and is lost in the crowd of flesh-eaters. Of course, this happens only minutes after Lauren and Cam exchange their first kiss!

Zombie Trap Success | By the time Lauren, Cam, Paula, and Luke get to the drill site, Sarah and Amy have rigged the shaft with explosives. The next part of the plan is to lead the flesh-eaters into the drill site and blow them to bits. Before anyone makes their way into the man-made cave, Lauren delivers the group of zombies a hearty serving of Rhodes.

Sarah volunteers herself to lead the zombies into the drill site channel because she sees no other way to get the undead to go inside, but Lauren and Amy won’t allow her to go in alone. Together, the three women courageously bait the zombies into the far reaches of the drill site. After successfully luring the living dead into the drill site, Sarah, Lauren, and Amy make a run for it, barely exiting the shaft before Paula and Luke set off the explosives and trap the zombies inside for hopefully another few hundred centuries like Sarah’s ancestors had done.

Father-Son Reunion | While the team of heroes is celebrating their win, Cam and his zombie-fied father, Detective McDermott (Mike Dopud) are back in town reconnecting. Yes, “reconnecting”. McDermott seems to remember his son when he saves Cam from a group of zombies swarms Cam moments earlier. When Cam gives his dad his wedding ring, McDermott grabs ahold of Cam and embraces him in a hug.

Pittsburg Ain’t Ready | Dr. Logan (Lucia Walters) is banking on her hopeful hypothesis that the zombie virus is curable. While visiting her daughter at a Pittsburg hospital, Dr. Logan injects her daughter with serum she had extracted from McDermott after taking her daughter off of life support. Just after Dr. Logan leaves the hospital, her daughter rises from the hospital bed as a living dead and ready to wreak havoc on Pittsburg.
