“Day of the Dead” Episode ‘Death Comes to Paymart’ Recap: A (un)Natural Disaster

In SYFY’s Day of the Dead penultimate episode, “Death Comes to Paymart,” Cleargenix’s connection to the viral zombie outbreak comes to light, and they will stop at nothing to cover up their dirty fracking mess and the unnatural disaster it’s caused.

Weary & Exhausted | Paula (Miranda Frigon) and Luke Bowman (Daniel Doheny), Jai Fischer (Dejan Loyola), Cam McDermott (Keenan Tracey), and Lauren Howell (Natalie Malaika) are now in the custody of Cleargenix officers. After retracing their observations of the morning’s events, Cam, Lauren, and Jai make a startling connection between the raging zombie virus and the Mawinhaken water supply. It appears that the town’s water source may be contaminated with the zombie virus and who’s to blame other than Cleargenix and their recent fracking activity?

Upon arriving at a Cleargenix facility, the group is locked into a room with no knowledge as to why, and Lauren’s infected arm is beginning to develop a mind of its own. Before Lauren’s arm can do any real harm, however, the Cleargenix men and Rhodes (Kevin O’Grady) begin filling the room with vehicle exhaust to snuff them out.

Sarah Blackwood (Morgan Holmstrom) makes it to the facility and goes full-on special ops on the Cleargenix soldiers in her search for her friends. While Sarah tries to force the door to the room imprisoning them, Jai crawls down the HVAC system to stop the exhaust at the source. Jai is successful in removing the hose at the end of the vent but dies due to his exposure to the fumes. Because of Jai’s heroism, his friends were able to survive.

Daddy Issues | At Paymart, the town’s make-shift crisis center, people are growing anxious and patience is wearing thin. With Mayor Bowman in the hands of Cleargenix, the survivors are in need of a leader. Captain Gloria Pike (Marci T. House) steps in when the store’s power suddenly goes out.

While in search of the breaker in the basement, Captain Pike discovers Herb (Gary Chalk) dead on the floor. Without knowing how Herb died, Captain Pike and Pops Parker (Jay Brazeau) suspect that Herb was murdered by Cindy (Stefanie von Pfetten), whose sister died during emergency surgery after arriving at Paymart earlier in the day.

Somehow the Cindy escapes and a second body turns up. This time it’s Pops. When Captain Pike finds Cindy, the frightened woman swears that she didn’t do it. To be safe, Captain Pike handcuffs Cindy to a wall. Captain Pike is clearly at her wit’s end when she contemplates taking Cindy’s life to prevent her from escaping a second time and killing someone else. Lucky for Cindy, the police captain decides against it.

Amy (Kristy Dawn Dinsmore) is attacked by a now undead Herb. Talk about “daddy issues”. Now is a better time than any for Amy to take out all of her grievances on her jerk of a father. Amy’s Krav Maga lessons come in handy and she is able to skewer zombie-Herb before he makes her a meal. Little does she know, Bobby Hart (Matty Finochio) has made the anticipated transition to flesh-eater and has just woken up starving.
