“The Way Home” Episode ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ Recap: Risking It All

In Episode “Somewhere Only We Know” of Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home, Kat Landry’s (Chyler Leigh) frequent trips to the past causes growing ripples between her and her loved ones of the present. With her brother Jacob (Spencer Macpherson) on the edge of death, is she risking her life back home for nothing?

Innocence Lost | In 1814, Jacob Landry is inches away from losing his life after suffering a torturous beating by Cyrus Goodwin (Tim Post) and his henchmen. Kat travels to the present day and rummages through the medicine cabinet at home in search of medical supplies for her dying brother in a flurry of desperation. Before she has the chance to leave with the supplies, her mother Del (Andie MacDowell) receives an unexpected phone call from the Port Haven mayor about their disappointment in the latest print from The Harold. The embarrassing paper causes Del’s concern with Kat’s increasing absence to come to a head and she stops Kat in her tracks just before her daughter to disappear again. A fight ignites between the two women, and although Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) tries to intervene, the rift between Del and Kat brings old wounds to the surface. Del ultimately tells Kat to leave, as she divulges that it is no different than Kat’s behavior in the past.

Kat slips the bag of medical supplies under her jacket and plunges into the pond. Unfortunately, the bandages, ointments, and medicine fail to follow her the 19th century. Thomas Coyle (Kris Holden-Ried) sits at the edge of the water awaiting her arrival. He takes Kat to the lighthouse that he had built with Jacob. Hidden within the secret cellar, Susanna Augustine (Watson Rose) is diligently tending to Jacob’s deadly fever and festering wounds – just as she had done weeks earlier for Kat.

Jacob’s frightening delirium sends Kat into a panicked rage that projects onto Thomas. Thomas only fuels Kat’s anger when he reveals that Jacob is no longer the innocent boy she knew. Jacob is the one who devised the plan to “profit off the profiteers” by skimming off rum sales made with England. Kat’s revelation that she doesn’t know her brother anymore crashes down on her like a wave of icy water. “I have to know him! You understand me?” Kat shouts at Thomas as she shoves her weight into his chest.

Mystery at Lingermore | While Kat works to save Jacob in 1814, Alice is determined to learn more about the incident that occurred during a party at the Lingermore mansion in 2007. The more Eliot (Evan Williams) and others who attended the gathering try to avoid Alice’s questions, the harder she seeks the truth about the events that led an entire town to shame the youth of that generation. At The Harold, Alice and Noah (Alexander Eling) scroll through endless pages of the town archives, but they come up short. Alice finally catches a lead with the discovery of a folder with photographic negatives.

Later that day, Noah visits Alice at the Landry home with his laptop and a negative scanning software in hand. Alice plays her iPod to pass the time while they wait for the photos to upload. A pop hit from the 2000s spills into the room and she and Noah break out in song. “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys can be heard from her bedroom window. As the song fades, Alice and Noah fill the space by moving closer and they share an unexpected kiss. Alice is taken back when Noah quickly moves away as though he didn’t want to kiss her. The awkward exchange of apologies is cut through as the rendering of the first photograph is completed. In the picture, Alice sees a blood-speckled floor and glasses that resemble those that Eliot wore as a teenager.

Eliot settles into his couch with the journal that notates Alice’s visits in the past. He opens the notebook to a page dated the 28th of October, 2007 – the day of the incident at Lingermore. His entry reads: “How can I face Alice again, if she ever comes back?!?!”

Don’t Lose Hope | Kat and Thomas sit call a truce around a fire at the cove. Kat divulges her fear of losing Jacob and being far away from any chance to get to know who Jacob is after twenty-four years of being away. Thomas assures her that there is still hope. “The distance, whether from stars or from people, it’s not the thing to be worrying about. Worry when you can’t find them at all,” he tells her.

The next day, Kat sits beside Jacob and strokes his hair. She pleads with him to come back to her. Where words fall short, Kat finds herself singing a song their father used to sing to them as children. As if the memory of the song cures him of his ailments, Jacob suddenly opens his eyes and gasps her name, “Kat”.
