“Echo” Episode “Maya” Recap: Let’s All Go to the Powwow

It’s the Echo finale and it’s finally time for the final confrontation between Maya and Kingpin in the aptly titled episode “Maya.” Who will come out on top? Let’s find out!

Wounded Bird | A flashback shows young Maya firing a slingshot at a poor innocent woodpecker and taking the wounded bird back to her mother, who heals it with energy glowing from her fingers. In present day, Chula (Tantoo Cardinal) arrives at the post office and runs into Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), who appears friendly to her, but asks her about Maya (Alaqua Cox). Speaking of whom, Maya arrives at a rest stop and removes the ASL translator contact lens Fisk gave her and throws it in the trash. Back in town, Biscuits (Cody Lightning) is working at the town powwow, as they call it, when Fisk’s men, including Zane (Andrew Howard), drive up in an RV.

Maya gets a text from Biscuits telling her that Bonnie (Devery Jacobs) and Chula are nowhere to be found, prompting Maya to drive back to her childhood home and see a vision of her mother, who encourages her to fight and protect her family using the gifts of her ancestors, all the women from the past flashbacks. To that end, she shows Maya the ceremonial wear that Chula was sewing before vanishing into thin air.

Powwow | As the powwow begins, Fisk’s men are posing as the volunteers in the crowd, but Maya sneaks into the tribal dancers, wearing the gown Chula made. Zane stands atop the RV right outside the fairgrounds and watches, while Maya sees a woodpecker standing on top of the barn. As Henry (Chaske Spencer) arrives and warns Biscuits of suspicious activity, Maya heads into the barn and sees Fisk and his men holding Bonnie and Chula hostage. As Zane opens a cooler containing a bazooka, Maya suddenly becomes possessed by her ancestors and uses this connection to puppeteer Chula and Bonnie and make them fight back against Fisk’s men.

Fireworks | Outside, Zane orders an army of men to storm the powwow, but Biscuits drives a freakin’ monster truck on top of the vans they’re waiting in, while Henry shoots Zane just as he fires his bazooka into the air, where it detonates harmlessly and everyone at the powwow assumes that it’s fireworks. After Maya, Bonnie and Chula dispatch Fisk’s men, Maya uses her abilities on Fisk and transports him to his childhood home, where he remembers his father beating his mother. Maya begs him to let go of his anger, but Fisk refuses and they end up back in the barn, Fisk angrily demanding to know what just happened.

Fisk escapes, but sometime later, Bonnie, Chula, Henry and Biscuits are having a barbecue and are pleasantly surprised when Maya shows up. During the credits, Fisk is on his plane heading back to New York when he sees a news report about the upcoming mayoral race and seems interested…
