“Wynonna Earp” Series Finale Recap: A WayHaught Wedding

Recap of Episode “Old Souls”

Wynonna Earp has come to an end on SYFY, but they went out with a bang. The season four finale, which likely doubles as the series finale, gave Earpers everything they could have hoped for. A haunted wedding dress, a WayHaught wedding, and Doc and Wynonna leaving the Ghost River Triangle together. ‘Old Souls’ was written by showrunner and creator Emily Andras and directed by Paolo Barzman. Here’s how the crazy episode unfolded!

Cursed Dress | The episode kicks off with a murder wedding that occurred decades earlier. The bride was in a dress with a blue sapphire heart on it, and was killing everyone around, ultimately ending with killing herself.

Cut to now, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) has that same dress, minus the blood stains, and is going to be wearing it for her wedding. Her and Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) are freaking out; they’re so excited for the wedding!

A little later, Nicole (Katherine Barrell) is filling the back of the truck up with flower arrangements as Wynonna inspects the cake. Wynonna doesn’t think the frosting is vegan, which isn’t going to fly with her baby sister. Wynonna wants everything to be perfect for Waves, but what are the chances of that actually happening? Waverly joins them and reassures her sister that everything is going to be fine, but Wynonna still isn’t very calm.

Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) and Nedley (Greg Lawson) are getting ready for a fishing trip they’re going on after the wedding. I love that Nedley is taking her under his wing!

Wynonna sees Waverly’s dress hanging in the barn and decides to try it on, big mistake. A very covered up Wynonna rushes to Doc’s (Tim Rozon), but it seems like everything she passes gets destroyed in her wake. Doc is caught off guard when Wynonna shows up on his doorstep in a wedding dress. Wynonna explains why she put it on and that now she’s stuck in it. They brainstorm how to get her out of it over a drink. Doc can’t find a zipper so he tries to cut her out, but his knife can’t cut the fabric.

Suddenly Waverly appears in her Jeep so Wynonna hides, she can’t let her sister know she’s stuck in her wedding dress. Waverly is there to give Doc a gift, Wyatt’s saddle, and to ask him to be her Best Man. Apparently Wynonna is Nicole’s, so she needs Doc to be hers. And honestly, I couldn’t think of anything more perfect. Before Waves leaves, Doc asks her where she got her wedding dress so he and Wynonna can go there to get some help.

Cursey’s Vintage | Of course the shop is called Cursey’s, and it’s run by a creepy woman named Brigitte (Charlotte Sullivan) who talks in a strange sing-songy voice. Brigitte explains that the wearer of the dress will kill everyone at the wedding, and it can only be undone by silkworms.

Back at the Homestead, Nicole, Waverly, and Jeremy (Varun Saranga) are noticing that things have been destroyed. Jeremy vows to get to the bottom of it and sets off towards the caterer while Waves and Nicole head to the bar. The caterer, Damon (Tenaj Williams), is pretty confused when Jeremy accuses him of being a demon and thinks Jeremy is attacking him for being gay. Waverly and Nicole realize the wedding dress is missing, and immediately realize it must be a haunted wedding dress. This is Purgatory, so naturally something like this would happen on a wedding day.

Doc and Wynonna are hunting for silkworms at a creek. While Doc is busy in the creek Wynona finds a letter addressed to her in his pocket and reads it. It’s a goodbye letter, he’s leaving after the wedding. She confronts him about it and is incredibly pissed.

At the Homestead, Waverly and Nicole are doing research into wedding murders in the Ghost River Triangle, of which there have been several. They discover that Brigitte had been left at the altar almost a hundred years ago and killed the guests, she must have cursed the dress to do the same to every person that wears it.

Jeremy interrupts Waves and Nicole having an intimate moment after they solve the murder dress mystery, they quickly catch him up and he realizes he really messed up with Damon.

Doc and Wynonna return to Cursey’s to try to pass off some painted earthworms as silk worms, but Brigitte isn’t so easily fooled. Soon after, Waverly bursts in and begins chasing Brigitte around the shop.

They catch Brigitte and get the dress off of Wynonna and destroy it. Brigitte also tells them that the dress does not choose the person, the person chooses the dress if they are in love. Which means Wynonna is in love with Doc! I mean, we knew it but it’s nice to have confirmation. Doc seems taken back by the news.

I Do’s | Waverly has decided to get married in her mother’s wedding dress. Wynonna gets emotional knowing her sister is getting married, and the sister’s hug.

Nicole, who is rocking an awesome pantsuit, is pacing in the Homestead when Nedley arrives bringing her boutonniere. Nicole then surprises him by asking him to walk her down the aisle. Of course, he agrees.

The next thing we know it’s wedding time! As a queer person, seeing this wedding between two women on tv means everything. It’s the perfect wedding for a couple, and a community, who really deserve it. The wedding is beautiful and emotional. They even made sure to have empty seats saved for those who couldn’t be there, including Dolls.

After the ceremony, Rachel sings a song dedicated to Nicole and Waverly. We see a montage of everyone celebrating and having a good time at the wedding. Wynonna makes a short speech, which is sweet for Wynonna. Billy (Billy Bryk) and Rachel ambush Nedley and ask if Billy can go on the pitching trip with them, and he agrees that the he can. Doc leaves without saying bye to Wynonna, and the look on her face is heartbreaking.

After the wedding Jeremy makes things right with Damon, and Damon asks him out for drinks the next night. Before Jeremy can answer he’s interrupted by a call from BBD. He’s being promoted to Deputy Chief and will run the whole Ghost River Triangle division. He accepts the promotion, and the date from Damon. Go Jeremy!

Wynonna isn’t going to let Doc leave so easily, she goes to his trailer and confronts him. Doc is very honest with her about what he wants, love. He wants her to leave with him, but she won’t leave her sister. After a heart wrenching goodbye, Doc climbs into Charlene and drives off.

Everyone Welcome | At the Homestead, Wynonna tells everyone about her goodbye with Doc and they’re all shocked she turned him down. But one person isn’t letting that happen, Waverly drags her sister by her ear to the barn to pack her stuff. Waverly no longer needs Wynonna around to take care of her, she wants her sister to go be happy with Doc.

After she’s all packed Wynonna throws her stuff into her truck and takes off, or tries to. The truck may need some maintenance before she’s ready to run again, so Wynonna goes with her second option; the motorcycle.

Wynonna is able to catch up to Doc and shoots out his back tire to get his attention. Wynonna confesses her love, then her and Doc jump onto her motorcycle and take off. They stop briefly before leaving the Ghost River Triangle and make plans to go to Miracles, Montana, to see Alice.

At the Homestead, Waverly and Nicole sit out on the porch and discuss their future. Waverly wants to know if some part of Nicole wishes they could leave like Doc and Wynonna, but Nicole doesn’t. She’s home with her wife, and that’s right where she wants to be.

The last shot in the episode is a beautiful one of the Earp mailbox. Only now it also has a few other signs on it: “And Haught” “Sometimes Holliday” “Everyone Welcome”.

This might be the end for Wynonna Earp, and if it is we just want to say thanks for the ride. Thank you Wynonna for teaching us that there is always a way. Thank you Waverly for teaching us how to truly accept all sides of ourselves. Nicole, thank you for teaching us to not take shit from the patriarchy, and that it’s okay to be a chicken kicker. Thank you Doc for teaching us that sometimes it’s a good thing to go all in. Jeremy, thank you for teaching us that being a nerd is a badge of honor. Thank you Dolls for making the ultimate sacrifice for love.

And to Emily Andras, thank you for being the driver of this crazy bus. Can’t wait to catch a ride on the next bus you lead.
