Things get crazy on this week’s episode of SYFY’s Wynonna Earp! We see what happens when Dark Waverly and Wynonna come head to head, a new Clanton heir is made, and how true love’s kiss can wake someone. We also see what happens to Mercedes after being shot by a BBD agent. ‘Better Dig Two’ was written by Emily Andras and directed by Paolo Barzman. Here’s what happened!
The Failsafe | The episode begins right where the last one ended. Mercedes (Dani Kind) is bleeding out in a BBD cell and Jeremy (Varun Saranga) is doing his best to keep Doc (Tim Rozon) from feeding on her.
In the woods, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) looks at Dark Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) in awe before realizing the fog is gone. Dark Waves says it’s no longer needed because she is the failsafe. Waverly is back to speaking in the third person like she did in the Garden. Wynonna doesn’t want to watch her sister do whatever Dark Waves plans on doing, so Dark Waverly takes Wynonna’s sight away. She can’t see what her sister is doing if she’s blind. Then Dark Waves leaves Wynonna alone in the woods without her sight.
Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) is holding Cleo (Savannah Basley) at gunpoint, but the Clanton heir begins to get into her head. She tells her the truth about Billy (Billy Bryk) being with Wynonna, how Wynonna doesn’t consider her family, and when Jolene’s hair erupts in flame Cleo tells Rachel that Billy will now go after Wynonna since Jolene is dead. But Cleo says they can save Wynonna one way, turn Billy Back. We all know how Rachel feels about him, of course she’s going to want to save him!
Jeremy is really struggling to keep Doc away from a very bloody Mercedes.
Back to Rachel and Cleo, Rachel is using her blood to try to bring Billy back. Cleo says this will tie them together forever, and Rachel responds by saying she just wants to help everyone. What a sweet girl!
Elsewhere in the woods, Wynonna is stumbling around, trying her best to blindly feel her way out of the woods. Someone else is there watching her, either a demon or a reaper.
As Rachel gets closer to saving Billy, Cleo uses the distraction to sneak over and get the teen’s gun.
Wynonna realizes she isn’t alone and that a reaper is after her so she runs. She’s sure she’s about to be reaper food, but a very human Billy grabs her instead. What Rachel did worked! Billy is human again! He gives Wynonna Peacemaker and they are both perplexed about how he’s human again. Billy helps her up and tells her to stay close as he leads her out of the woods.
Born to be a Vamp | Jeremy is exhausted from preventing Doc from feeding on Mercedes. Our favorite scientist offers himself up as a meal to his friend in order to save Mercedes. Doc, instead, hugs Jeremy and says he will resist his urge. Mercedes is very close to death and comes up with a brilliant idea. She wants Doc to turn her into a vampire. She says she was born to be one, and honestly she’s probably right. There will be no vampire as glamorous and fabulous as Mercedes. Doc double checks that he has her consent, [because consent is sexy!] then sires her.
Nicole (Katherine Barrell) is running through the woods looking for Wynonna. Her radio picks up on a BBD signal and she listens in; BBD is planning on destroying Purgatory and leaving no survivors. She’s got a town to protect.
Vamp Mercedes looks GOOD! She teams up with Doc to use her new vamp strength to bust everyone out of the BBD cell. She feeds on the officers as they make their way through the facility letting other creatures and people out of their cells. It’s a full-blown jail break!
Wynonna gets her vision back and she and Billy come across the site Rachel and Cleo used to bring Billy back. He realizes what happened and that they probably did it to save Wynonna. Billy wants to go back to Magpie Ranch to save Rachel from Cleo, but Wynonna wants to go after Demon Waverly. Billy convinces Wynonna to help Rachel by saying Waverly would want her to, which is very true. Billy knows he can’t go to the ranch himself, so Wynonna will have to go alone.
BBD is burning and people and demons are fighting everywhere as Demon Waverly approaches. Inside the building, Doc, Jeremy, and Mercedes are leading a large group looking for a way out of the building. Gas pours in through the vents and the doors ahead of them open. General Graham (Stafford Perry) is standing there, with a gun to his head. A gun held by Nicole Haught. She’s freeing her town, and declares that it will be an inclusive town from now on. Except to dickwads like General Graham.
Nicole leads the group outside and Jeremy realizes the fog is gone. Doc starts acting a little strange then says he has to get ready, but for what he doesn’t know. He also knows that the gas inside the building won’t affect him, so he volunteers to go back in and help any stragglers out.
Wynonna makes it to Magpie Ranch to rescue Rachel from Cleo. Cleo has Rachel tied up inside one of the buildings and she’s ranting about how awful her mother and most of her family were. Wynonna runs in and frees Rachel, but this was all part of Cleo’s plan. She sets Reaper Holt (Ty Olsson) on Wynonna. Cleo reveals that Margot never explained the entire Clanton curse to her, but now that she’s the heir she’s realizing what that truly entails. She can constantly hear the reapers and their desire for revenge and to eat. Cleo’s true plan is to pass on the Clanton curse to Wynonna, make her the heir and kill everyone she loves.
Doc is wandering around BBD looking for people to help and trying to ignore the voices he hears in his head. He goes outside and runs into Dark Waverly. She is looking for something that Doc has, and will take it from him if need be. Waverly Gibson’s book, that’s what she wants. Doc refuses to hand over the book, when he suddenly gets a pain in his hand. The Clanton C appears in his palm, he is now the Clanton heir, those voices he heard were the reapers.
The Clanton Heir | Cleo doesn’t think it worked, transferring the Clanton curse to Wyonna. What she doesn’t realize is that she did succeed in transferring it to Doc. Who shows up with his gun pointed at Wynonna. Doc chases Wynonna outside and Cleo takes off now that she’s freed of her family’s burden. Wynonna tries talking to the real Doc that’s somewhere inside of Clanton Heir Doc, but he doesn’t seem to respond to that. Instead Doc tells Wynonna they are going to duel, and that’s how he plans on killing her. Rachel has also been caught by Reaper Holt and is now watching the showdown between the cursed families. Doc promises to spare Rachel’s life if Wynonna picks up the gun and duel’s him. After a few tense moments Wynonna picks up Peacemaker, but she’s not giving up that easily. She has one last plan that just might save her life.
Back at BBD, Nicole is loading a bunch of people onto a truck to get them to safety, but before they leave Jeremy tells her something important. She must go to the Stairs and stop Waverly, she’s the only one Dark Waves won’t hurt.
Billy goes to Shorty’s to get help from Nedley (Greg Lawson). He wants to use his weird Clanton tooth to make himself the Clanton heir and needs Nedley to do the incantations, which we know Nedley loves.
It’s duel time at the ranch, and Wynonna’s last chance to save herself. Wynonna refuses to turn around and face Clanton Doc, knowing that deep down the real Doc is in there and won’t shoot someone in the back. Wynonna shoots Reaper Holt, freeing Rachel, and Doc shoots at Wynonna. But his gun backfires on him, leaving her unscathed. Wynonna runs to Doc and realizes he loaded his gun with the wrong bullets, our Doc is still in there and doesn’t want Wynonna dead! But they can hear the reaper’s coming towards them.
Back at Shorty’s, Nedley has successfully incanted the tooth back into Billy’s head, making him the heir. Billy commands his kin to stand down, and it works.
Doc begs Wynonna to kill him, he’s lived long enough and needs to pay for his sins. But she does not want to end his life, we all know she loves him. She refuses to kill him, knowing there was another way. Cue Dark Waves standing there saying they need a miracle. Wynonna begs her sister to save him, she can’t stand to lose him and her sister. Wynonna promises to give Dark Waves the Waverly Gibson book if she saves Doc, so she does it. She gives Doc another shot at life. Wynonna hands over the book and asks her sister to not leave, but Dark Waves turns away to leave. But not before telling Wynonna that Waverly loved her very much. As she’s leaving the ranch she turns all the reapers into birds, freeing them of their curse.
Waverly is ascending the stairs to the Garden when Nicole arrives, trying to stop her. Waverly says she is the one that must protect the Ghost River Triangle, but when Nicole mentions Wynonna something seems to shift inside her a little, but doesn’t work. Nicole tries something drastic that just might work, she offers to be the Guardian over both realms in the Triangle, becoming the Shield. Nicole convinces her to look in the book, proving that Waverly’s story is also Nicole’s story. Dark Waves opens the book and sees what Nicole is talking about, but says it’s a high price to pay. But Nicole is more than willing to pay it. She will never be able to leave the Triangle, but that is fine with Nicole. Nicole swears an oath to protect the GRT, and it works. Our Waverly is back! She throws her book into the Garden then goes to Nicole, who is unconscious on the ground. Just like in the fairytales, true love’s kiss is what wakes Nicole up. Now Nicole has a badass mark on the back of her neck signifying that she is the Shield.
At BBD, General Graham is trying to get Jeremy to call in backup, but Jeremy’s not going to do that. Our werewolf friend takes care of Graham, leaving Purgatory relatively safe.
Everyone is recovering from the intense day at Shorty’s. Doc and Wynonna seem to be on much better terms now, maybe even on their way back to their normal dynamics. Waves is pretty sure Dark Angel Waverly is gone, at least for the time being. Doc realizes his reflection is back, Waverly cured him of his vampirism. Waves responds by saying he must have wanted her to do that, that’s why it happened. Doc says he did, he wanted a fresh start, and now he’s got it. Nicole keeps interrupting everyone because she wants to talk about something: the wedding!
