“Wynonna Earp” Recap: The Demon In All Of Us

Wynonna Earp‘s fifth installment of the third season was an EXCELLENT episode to truly get lost in. Jolene wreaks havoc in everyone’s lives, but especially Waverly’s, and shows just how hard-hitting our demons can be. The craziness of ‘Jolene’ was written by Shelley Scarrow and directed by Paolo Barzman, and this is what went down!

Delicious Desserts | The episode opens with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) tying Mama (Megan Follows) up in the barn. Mama hastily explains how she got the demon bound to her on accident the night she burned down the barn, she was actually trying to exorcise it when things went awry and it’s been bound to her ever since. Well, at least until Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) touched Mama, then it was able to leave Mama and is now out roaming free. As the audience we know Jolene (Zoie Palmer) is the demon, but due to her delicious magical desserts anyone who eats them thinks they’ve known her their whole lives.

Inside, Jolene is feeding Waverly more pastries while holding a knife threateningly behind her back. Wynonna doesn’t know what to do with Mama so she talks to Doc (Tim Rozon) and Jolene about it. Doc starts to come out of his sugar and magic induced spell when Jolene shoves another snickerdoodle in his mouth to keep him under her thumb. Doc uses this time to tell Wynonna about the third voice he heard on mama’s therapy tapes, which in turn forces him to reveal his trip to Hell to her. Then he concludes by telling her that Waverly is definitely in danger.

Waverly is talking with her mother about the demon and learns that Mama started seeing the demon appearing in picyures behind Waves, getting closer and closer in each picture. This sparks a memory in Waverly from Kindergarten, she could see a monster with lots of teeth behind her in a mirror in class and was always afraid of it. Mama tells Waverly how much this demon hates her, and Waverly mentions Jolene, a name Mama doesn’t seem to recall.

Tongue’s the Word | Jolene finds the revenant officer Wynonna previously beheaded and gets him out of his cruiser. She then throws her pie and cuts off his tongue.

Doc (Tim Rozon) meets Mama and she finds out that one of her daughter’s is dating THE Doc Holliday and the other one is queer and dating a hot cop. Jolene shows up and feeds Mama a pastry, bringing her under her spell. Mama then shares her plan to re-bond the demon with herself with the class, which is probably not the best thing since the demon is right there listening. Doc and Jolene speak, and Jolene reveals she knows Doc’s dark secrets and begins to cast doubts in his mind about his worth to the team. This is what Jolene, and any of our own personal demons, does. Our demons take what is most important to us and begin to cast doubts in our minds and makes us question our own worth to the people we care about most. It’s torturous and dark and real. We all have our own personal Jolene’s that we deal with. After Doc eats another snickerdoodle he calls Waverly stupid, which is just not okay.

Julian | Mama and Waverly finally discuss Waverly’s father while they are in the Gibson Farm Green House with Wynonna. Mama reveals that his name is Julian, but doesn’t reveal much else. But the whole time she is talking about him she was looking at a statue of an angel.

Time for Jolene to get Nicole (Katherine Barrell) on her side. The demon tricks the cop to pull her over then feeds her a scone. Jolene uses this opportunity to begin to put doubts into Nicole’s head, making her feel left out of the plans Wynonna and Waverly make. Jolene casually mentions that she can’t physically harm Waverly, but forces Nicole to keep eating and forget what she heard. Nicole calls the Earp sisters “Earp bitches,” but then realizes she’s not sounding like herself, and for the briefest of moments we see Jolene’s true ugly demony form.

At the green house, the tongue-less revenant bursts through the door and Wynonna uses Peacemaker to send him back to Hell. They think this was Waverly’s demon and celebrate its defeat. Waverly can hear someone calling for her outside and goes to find out what it is, and finds Jolene outside. Jolene verbally attacks Waverly and threatens her in her true form. Waverly screams and hits the demon with her gun, but Jolene [in human form] calls to Wynonna and Mama and tell them Waves attacked her. And guess who they believe…Jolene.

Bar Brawl | Back at the Homestead, Mama and Wynonna drink to their “victory” and make fun of Waverly before the littlest Earp apologizes to Jolene for hitting her. Jolene throws Nicole under the bus before feeding Waves another cupcake.

It’s karaoke night at Shorty’s, and it’s definitely a night the gang won’t forget for a while. Jolene continues to stir things up by telling Wynonna Kate (Chantel Riley) is Doc’s wife, creating a very pissed off Wynonna. Wynonna is so upset and fueled from Jolene’s vile desserts that she calls Waverly her “half-sister,” which is the biggest slap in the face. All the animosity eventually leads to a HUGE bar fight with just about everyone involved. Waverly started it by slapping Jolene for flirting with Nicole, but just about everyone got in on it.

Instead of being at his bar, Doc is out at the well, talking to Bobo (Michael Eklund). He wants information on Bulshar (Jean Marchand) and how he might be able to defeat him. Bobo wants a visit from Waverly in exchange for information, and Doc promises to try to get her to come. Bobo tells Doc that Bulshar wants his ring. The same ring that Nicole threw into the forest last episode.

The morning after the brawl, Mama and Wynonna wake up in the drunk tank together. Nicole threw them in there and won’t release them to Waverly until they are sober. Nicole also says some pretty awful things to Waverly as she eats more pastries from Jolene. Once Mama sobers up enough she realizes the revenant they killed wasn’t the demon and finally, with unintentional help from Nedley (Greg Lawson), realizes Jolene is the real demon.

Nicole finds herself face to face with Jolene in Waverly’s room, and Jolene is trying to come on to Nicole. But Nicole’s love for Waverly is stronger than any pastry and she refuses Jolene’s advance, pissing off the demon. Somehow, Bulshar’s ring appears on the dresser and burns Jolene when she gets touched by it. She realizes it’s Bulshar’s and begins to panic. She throws Nicole in the closet and takes off.

Stronger Than Demons | Jolene finds Waverly and uses her depression monster powers to try to get Waverly to kill herself. But Waverly uses the inner strength that we all possess to fight back her demon and choose life. Wynonna shows up just in time to help her baby sis, but it is ultimately Bulshar who takes our Jolene by using the trees to snap her neck.

WayHaught share an adorable scene where Nicole jokes about being thrown into the closet, and then they discuss Bulshar’s ring and how it boomerang’d its way back to Nicole.

Doc, now with Bulshar’s ring, goes into the forest and yells to Bulshar. He basically tells Bulshar his previous offer can suck it and he’s going to do whatever it takes to see him get taken down.

Angel | Wynonna visits Bobo in his well and learns something interesting about Waverly’s father, Julian. He’s an angel, a real angel.
