Episode 3 of Wynonna Earp was really just a beautiful goodbye episode to Dolls, and now in episode 4 we see the gang pull themselves together and get back to work killing revenants and trying to figure out what to do about Bulshar. ‘No Cure for Crazy,’ written by Brendon Yorke and directed by Ron Murphy, introduces some new characters and the crazy cliffhanger ending will leave you begging for answers!
Living Trees | The episode kicks off with a fun chase scene between Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), Doc (Tim Rozon), and a revenant. The revenant almost gets away, but suddenly a tree jumps in front of him and he runs into it, allowing Wynonna and Doc to catch him. Unfortunately, Peacemaker decides it doesn’t want to work on the revenant right now, so Doc knocks him off and they take him with them.
Elsewhere in the woods, a new guy is wondering around and finds a tree that appears to be bleeding. So he does what no one should EVER do, and tastes it. He realizes that this is some sort of “murder tree” and takes off, but we suddenly see a human eye in part of the tree. WTF?!?!?
Continuing on the woods/tree theme, Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) are checking out the site where Nicole survived the massacre, and she’s shocked by the size of the trees here. Nicole shares more about the attack and realizes that BBD must have interfered and covered up what truly happened. They staged the fire to burn the evidence of the massacre. Suddenly, the tree-licker comes stumbling out of the woods and Waves actually knows him from school. His name is Robin (Justin Kelly), and he asks Waverly to take him to Nedley (Greg Lawson). Nicole decides this is the time to get rid of Bulshar’s ring, and tosses it into the woods. Because that totally seems like a good idea.

Never Get Out | Wynonna and Doc return to the office with their revenant, when Wynonna reveals to Nicole that she knows about her surviving the cult massacre. Nicole seems a little annoyed that Waverly told, but Waves instead turns it into a beautiful and silly moment between all three ladies. Wynonna then offers to take her little sis to visit their mother, but Waverly isn’t ready. So instead Wynonna gives her sister their mother’s file so she can learn about her mother. Wynonna assures Waverly their mother is doing better.
Cut to Mama (Megan Follows) going absolutely BONKERS in her cell and attacking her cellie to write “Never Get Out” in her blood.
At Shorty’s, Wynonna and Doc are flirting around when we get a flashback from her visit to Mama in prison 7 years ago. During that visit, Mama told Wynonna about Bulshar, but of course that name meant nothing the Earp Heir at the time. Wynonna was telling her mother that she was leaving Purgatory for good, but Mama was upset Wynonna was leaving Waverly. Then Mama insisted Waverly could not know she was in there and could never see her, then she told Wynonna to never come back. That must have been the last time Wynonna saw her before the season 2 finale. After the flashback Nicole is finally the interruptor instead of the interrupted when she interrupts Wynonna and Doc kissing.
Murder Tree | Thanks to an obvious setup by Waverly, Jeremy (Varun Saranga) and Robin meet and set up a date to go check out the murder tree Robin found together. As Waverly was fleeing from her setup, she receives a phone call from the Ghost River Institution regarding her mother. There’s been an incident regarding Michelle and they need a signature in order to transfer her to another facility. Waverly is finally going to see her mother after all these years, but it doesn’t go as planned. Mama seemed happy to see her youngest daughter momentarily, but then she starts screaming at Waverly to get out or she’ll kill her. The guard tases Michelle, she collapses while saying “kill the demon,” and repeated that as she was being dragged away.
On the murder tree date, Robin and Jeremy are having trouble locating said murder tree, though Robin is certain he went the same way as earlier. They end up finding a mysterious stairway in the middle of the forest, and I have a feeling it wasn’t to Heaven but to something much more sinister. Jeremy insinuated as much when he could just FEEL that the staircase was not meant for them.
After an interesting meeting with Nedley (Greg Lawson) and the City Manager, Wynonna sees Waverly is upset and goes to inquire about it. Waverly filled her big sis in on what happened and Wynonna is NOT HAPPY when she finds out Mama tried to kill Waverly. She storms the prison to threaten Mama, but Mama pulls one over on them all when she steals Peacemaker and escapes! The Warden has Wynonna detained as an accomplice to her mother’s escape.
Burn Baby Burn | Waverly fills Nicole in on everything that happened with Mama and Nicole is basically the best girlfriend ever and handles it wonderfully! Then, thanks to Nedley, we learn the real reason Michelle Gibson was arrested; she tried to burn the barn down, while Waverly was in it.
Doc is in the forest searching for Jeremy and Robin, when suddenly he hears a baby crying. He goes after it and finds himself momentarily back in Hell before coming fact to face with Bulshar (Jean Marchand). The demon wants Doc to do his bidding in exchange for a “reprieve” so he can forget he’s going to spend an eternity in Hell. Jeremy and Robin find Doc and snap him out of the weird trance Bulshar had him in in order to make his offer.
Back at the prison, Wynonna finds out a bit more about the fire that wound Mama in the prison, then she finds out the prison guard is a revenant and the Warden orders him to kill her. Wynonna is able to decapitate the revenant and return his head to the Warden, who lets her free but not before telling her that Mama has tried to kill Waverly before.
Later, Jeremy and Robin make plans for the future and Robin sets off home, but before leaving he coughs up something that looks like it could have been blood or some kind of muck. Then moments later, he is TAKEN BY A TREE outside of his house.
Waverly has her mother’s therapy tapes and listens to those with Nicole when Doc shows up. He can hear a third voice on the tapes, one no one else can hear, and he says they “will not be enough,” whatever that means.
Waverly finds her mother in the barn, standing inside some sort of occult symbol. She appears to be trying to perform either a summoning or an exorcism when Waverly interrupts. Mama tells her the demon, who is not Waverly as she feared, is there. Waverly turns around and we see a terrifying demon behind her.
Later that night Wynonna returns home and finds Doc, Nicole, and Waverly around the table, all looking oddly happy and holding cupcakes. Suddenly we see the source of the cupcakes and silly smiles, it’s the demon. Only she has a normal face [the face of Zoie Palmer], and we find out her name is Jolene. She force feeds Wynonna a “magic” brownie and suddenly, Wynonna is buying into all of Jolene’s lies.
