The previous episode of SYFY’s Wynonna Earp left us all heartbroken when Sergeant Xavier Dolls, played by Shamier Anderson, heroically died saving his friends. This week’s episode, ‘Colder Weather’ was definitely a tear jerker and highlighted that there are several different ways to deal with grief. The episode was written by showrunner Emily Andras, and directed by Ron Murphy. Here is how Wynonna and the gang are dealing with their grief.
Lots of Whiskey | The episode opens with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) drunkenly stumbling through the woods callin gout for Bulshar (Jean Marchand). Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) are nearby and run to her aid when she comes across a revenant she’s too drunk/tired to kill. Waverly did what any little sister would do and shot the revenant right in the dick for her big sis.
I think it’s important to mention that the theme song is an acoustic cover of the original song to match the sad and somber tone of the episode, and it is absolutely brilliant, beautiful, and heartbreaking. It was an excellent choice to go with that cover! Oh, and the lovely Katherine Barrell has been added to the opening sequence!
Waves and Nicole are trying to make arrangements for Dolls when Nicole reveals an interesting tid-bit about herself: she wants a sky burial where vultures eat her body then poop her back onto the land. Weird! And Waverly learns the unfortunate news that Ward Earp did not get her a plot with the rest of the family in the cemetery. WayHaught also share a super cute and hilarious moment when the funeral director. Wynonna walks in during the meeting and immediately walks out, she’s not ready to deal with this stuff yet.
Wynonna allows herself to feel the pain for a moment with Doc (Tim Rozon), but the moment doesn’t last very long. Wynonna reveals that Dolls was from Arizona, but doesn’t want to send him back there, he’s already with his family.
Suddenly, a bus pulls into town and a man with a Black Badge tattoo on his hand exits.

All the Sandwiches | The group decides they need to have a wake for Dolls, and Waverly loses it a bit saying she’s going to make all kinds of sandwiches and then giggling, then she accuses Doc of not having feelings. Doc smashes his glass across the room, proving that he too has feelings, he just deals with them differently than Miss Giggly Sandwich Maker. Nicole reveals two things in this scene: the first is that she and Dolls had a mutual trust and respect for one another, so much so that she has a key to his apartment. The second is that Jeremy (Varun Saranga) is performing an autopsy on Dolls and Wynonna is NOT okay with that and rushes over there.
Meanwhile, Doc meets the stranger who got off the bus after realizing his bar had been broken into. After almost having a shoot-out, the man reveals he is a friend of Dolls’.
Elsewhere, WayHaught is at Dolls’ apartment and Nicole reveals what she remembers of the night she encountered the Cult of Bulshar. It’s a crazy story and Nicole finally began putting all the pieces together after Widow-Cedes mentioned his name. Nicole breaks down when she begins talking about how Dolls was helping her and now he’s gone and let me tell you, IF NICOLE CRIES I CRY. So I definitely sobbed through this scene…several times.
Wynonna confronts Jeremy and was momentarily relieved when she found out Jer couldn’t perform the autopsy, but that quickly turned to rage when she learned that Jeremy knew Dolls was dying. Dolls couldn’t survive without the BBD drugs, and because Jeremy kept this from her, Wynonna tells him to pack up and leave. OH NO, POOR JEREMY.
Wynonna goes straight to Shorty’s to tell Doc about Jeremy where she finds the gunslinger pounding back shots with Dolls’ buddy, Ramon Quinn (Peter Mooney). Quinn reveals that Dolls whole squad is dead as a result of the drugs BBD had been using on them for years. Quinn is the only survivor only due to the fact that he had the wrong blood type for the experiment. Quinn implies that Dolls stayed in Purgatory instead of seeking help from BBD for Wynonna, which might be true but he should not put that guilt on her!
For When He’s Gone | WayHaught continue their discussion about what happened to Nicole and she finally says she loves Waverly!!! They see a shadow outside the window, only they are on the third floor, soooo that’s a little unusual. Waverly gets her purse stolen by who we know is Kate (Chantel Riley). The big problem here is that Waves and Nicole had found an envelope for Wynonna from Dolls, labeled “for when I’m gone,” and now that’s gone.
At the wake, the group plus Quinn toast to Dolls and eat sandwiches. Doc reveals to Waverly what his last conversation about Dolls was about, and how he went to Hell when he died. Waverly feels bad, but has a more timely problem to deal with, getting that envelope back. She and Doc sneak out of the wake in order to retreat it. Quinn reveals to Wynonna that BBD may still be around, and may try to retrieve Dolls’ body, so maybe an unmarked grave would be best for him.
Nicole and Jeremy finally get a scene together, we definitely need more of that pair! Jeremy realizes that Dolls’ drugs are gone, suddenly there’s trouble upstairs. A group of revenants are the ones who broke in and stole the drugs, then proceeded to inject them and head to Shorty’s all dragon-juiced up. How did they know about the drugs and where to get them? My money is on Rosita. The group takes on the suped up revenants and Wynonna sends some of them back to hell before the others run off. She calls Waverly and Doc to find out where they are and fill them in on what’s going down.
Quinn is seriously disturbed over the fact that the revenants were able to get BBD drugs, but then he notices Jeremy and makes the BBD connection, and you can see he immediately does not trust Jeremy.
Waverly and Doc return to the Gardner house to get the envelope back, and Doc reveals that Kate is his wife!!! Waves demands to get her stuff back, but Kate first tells her future through tarot. Kate returns Waverly’s purse, and cute little Waverly goes off and tells them they need to all figure out how to survive alongside one another. Then Kate sees something about Waverly in the tarot card Waves touched, but we don’t know what.
Wynonna goes to apologize to Jeremy at Nicole’s insistence, and finds Quinn torturing Jeremy with a staple gun. Quinn wants the rest of Jeremy’s drugs so he can shoot up and go after BBD, to make up for his past roles in his friends fates. But Wynonna talks him out of it, and in doing so I think she helps herself a bit.
Saying Goodbye | Later, Wynonna say goodbye to Quinn and gives him Dolls dog tags and tells him not to come back, but I have a feeling he just might!
The funeral scene is one of the saddest and most cathartic moments in television I have ever seen. Every character says goodbye in their own way, leaving little things with his ashes like his mug and beanie. Wynonna leaves her key necklace on the headstone, hopefully so she can retrieve it later if they need it! The music during this scene was also perfect and paired extremely well with what was happening onscreen.
“Keep Going. Keep Fighting | Later that night Wynonna and Waverly share a sister moment outside by the fire. They discuss their plans for when they die, and they decide they’re going to be buried side-by-side on the Homestead land. Waves gives her sister the envelope Dolls left her, it’s photographs. One is of one night out with the whole group, and the other is the surveillance photo he had of her when he first came to Purgatory.
Doc went to Kate after the burial, where he learned that Kate learned the truth about him from Wyatt, and she’s been looking for him ever since. They end up kissing, and probably a lot more.
What do you think will happen in episode 4?
