“Wynonna Earp” Recap: Game. Changer.
Wynonna Earp‘s showrunner has been talking about episode 205 and how it’s a “game-changing episode” for several weeks, and we have finally seen it! The episode contains such a game-changing reveal that it was embargoed from reviewers, so OMFGTV had to stress about it live with everyone else! ‘Let’s Pretend We’re Strangers’ was written by John Callaghan and directed by April Mullen, and here’s what went down!
You’re in a cult, call your dad | This episode introduces a whole new interesting element to the narrative, The Order. The Order is a very old, cultish type of group that roams the Ghost River Triangle protecting its inhabitants from demons. They are led by Ewan Allenbach (Brendan Fehr), and Juan Carlo (Shaun Johnston) is somehow connected to them and thinks they could be allies. The Order are hidden in plain sight, but our band of weirdos discovers them.
“You’re an hour late and an Earp short.” | When we first see Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), she is still completely possessed. Goononna has Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) tied to a chair and is making her a delicious bacon and rat breakfast smoothie. Waverly threatens the demon, so it decides it’s time to kill the littlest Earp. Thankfully Wynonna is able to break through at the last moment and stop herself from hurting Waves. They have an amazing Earp sisters moment, but it’s broken when Doc (Tim Rozon) arrives to take the girls to work and Goononna regains control.
Goononna tells Doc that Waverly is sick, then changes it to hungover, when he asks about her. He’s got a new car and is eager to show it off, meanwhile Waverly is inside tied and gagged, hopping around on the chair until she topples over.
At the Purgatory Sheriff’s Department, Goononna indulges in Wynonna’s one true love, donuts. While she’s stuffing her face, Doc gives Jeremy (Varun Saranga) the plate from the previous episode. Jeremy immediately licks it to determine that it’s newer than 1952, because the paint isn’t lead-based. He realizes the image is painted over another image, and scans the plate to reveal the hidden image. It’s the symbol of the Purgatory Volunteer Fire Department. Jeremy wants to take the plate to BBD headquarters to run more tests, but will have to settle for pictures only.
Waverly is still on the floor when Dolls (Shamier Anderson) arrives. He makes sure she isn’t armed, then draws his weapon. The last time he saw her she was possessed in the barn, now she has to prove she’s really her. Once she remembers what she did as Gooverly and apologizes, she fills him in on the Goononna problem.
Goononna hasn’t caused enough trouble yet, so she decides to take on Nicole (Katherine Barrell) next. She tells her Waverly needs some space and some other hurtful things. Once Nicole leaves we see that Wynonna had been trying to send her a message by writing “possesed”–yes she spelled it wrong–on a post-it note. Unfortunately Nicole doesn’t see it. Wynonna takes the pen and stabs herself in the hand, trying to stop the demon. Instead it just regains control and heals itself.

“The situation is balls.” | Waverly, still tied to the chair, describes to Dolls what being possessed by the demon was like. Dolls says those kinds of demons are called Passengers by BBD, and him and Waves both know that they form Legion, whatever that is. We discover that Waverly was possessed by the demon for 7 weeks, nad was fighting hard that whole time. Their conversation is cut short when Lucado (Kate Drummond) finds them. The two BBD agents have the most badass fight of all time when Waverly frees herself and shoots her shotgun into the air, breaking up the fight.
Back with Goononna and Doc, they’re at a diner eating a very sugary breakfast before going to the fire department. Once they arrive at the fire house, Goononna begins acting even more strange. Ewan greets them and tells them a little bit of history; they’re on consecrated grounds, which explains Goononna’s freakout. Goononna pulls a knife on Ewan, prompting Doc to drag her out. This was the last flag in a series of red flags that leads Doc to the discovery that this is not Wynonna. He throws her into the trunk of his new car and drives her to PSD, where he is greeted by Dolls and Waverly. They get Goononna into a holding cell then discuss their options.
They realize Lucado may be their only option, unfortunately she hasn’t heard from BBD in weeks! Instead, Lucado suggests they get a sample of the goo so they can analyze it, but she reminds them if her biggest rule: don’t touch the goo. Waves and Doc take off in search of tentacle goo, but Dolls stays behind to talk demons with Lucado. They know what this demon is, they’ve seen it before; Mictian. They’re going to need bone, tissue and blood to unbind it, and Dolls volunteers to get all those things from Goononna.
Dolls goes to Goononna in her cell, she taunts him but then realizes he needs a finger. She tries to cry to make him stop, but the real Wynonna fights her way through and tells him to do it, even offering her pinky to him. Dolls quickly apologizes and cuts it off, but as soon as he leaves Goononna has returned and already grown her finger back. He delivers the finger to Lucado, and she informs him she wants to turn Goononna into BBD to get them both off the hook. Dolls is not too keen on the idea and draws his gun, telling her Wynonna is staying there and to analyze the goo.
During this time, Waverly and Doc are looking everywhere for goo remnants, but there aren’t any. Juan Carlo appears to them with a little advice. The Order cleaned up all the goo, if they want them to leave Wynonna alone they need to give them something in exchange. Then he quite literally disappears.
Lucado is able to get to goo out of the finger sample Dolls brought her, but suddenly the goo begins to speak to her. Lucado has been through so much and already feels so beaten down, it’s no surprise when she touches the goo and becomes Goocado. What does come as a surprise is that she can’t handle it, quickly warns Dolls to get out, and HER HEAD EXPLODES. Black goo goes everywhere. I don’t think even the goo can regenerate that.
Dolls has to quickly fill Doc and Waverly in on what happened to Lucado, then he informs them he’s found a way to save Wynonna, but they have no way of killing Mictian if Wynonna can’t use Peacemaker.
Waverly Earp, the youngest and bravest of the Earp’s, decides she needs to do something to save her big sis. She goes to the holding cell and tells her sister she’s not able to save them, but Wynonna is, then she kisses her sister to get the demon back into her body! In doing this Waverly proves that she is just as strong, smart, and important as her sister. She is sacrificing herself to set her sister free of the demon’s influence so she can get it out of Waves and shoot it. Once Wyn is no longer possessed she knows Mictian’s plan: Get hit by lightning to fuse itself permamently into Waverly’s body.
Gooverly rushes to the barn to be with its shiny tower, but Nicole beats her there. Gooverly pretends to be Waverly and tells Nicole Wynonna is still possessed and has hurt her. Nicole believes her girlfriend and stands protectively in front of her.
Outside, The Order has arrived and is preparing to kill Waverly to get Mictian out of her. Wynonna has to chug some Holy Water to prove she’s no longer possessed and give Ewan the Purgatory Fair plate to be allowed into her own barn to save her baby sister.
When Wynonna walks in, Gooverly tells Nicole to shoot Wynonna, and that’s when Nicole realizes her girlfriend isn’t there. Gooverly throws Nicole across the barn, and Wynonna is forced to get creative to get Waverly to drink the solution, and Waves breaks through for a moment to remind Wynonna of a childhood memory that could help. Wynonna ends up getting Gooverly on the ground and forces her to drink the solution.
As soon as Waverly swallows it, she sits up and expels the most repugnant looking substance from her body. Wynonna shoots the slimy little demon with Peacemaker, and all is well.
Or, at least we’d like it to be. But this is Wynonna Earp and nothing goes a planned.
Jeremy returns from BBD headquarters to inform Dolls that there’s nothing there. BBD is gone.
And if that wasn’t crazy enough, here’s the real game changer of the show: Wynonna Earp is pregnant.
Boom! I bet no one expected that twist at the end! In an exclusive interview with Variety, the showrunner Emily Andras and Melanie Scrofano revealed the reason behind that crazy game-changer, Melanie was actually pregnant! Instead of trying to hide the pregnancy, they decided to put it into the show! Because guess what, people get pregnant in real life, and it’s nice to see that reflected in one of our favorite shows!
Wynonna Earp airs Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
