“Wynonna Earp” Recap: Nicole Figures Out Purgatory

Once again, Wynonna Earp has knocked everyone’s socks off with yet another exciting episode! This week sees the team settle into their new roles, and really get back into peak Wynonna Earp form. “Gonna Getcha Good,” written by Brendon Yorke and directed by Ron Murphy, is full of laughs, horror, and a bit of cheerleading. Here is what went down!

The Opening That Killed The Internet | The episode kicks off with Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) dancing her ass off in her old high school cheerleading uniform for her girlfriend, Nicole (Katherine Barrell). Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) once again cockblocks by walking in, prompting Nicole to leave and a quick Earp sisters moment occurs. Waves becomes fascinated by how shiny Peacemaker is, is that her Gooverly showing?

The Scary Sackman | The main villain of the episode is a creepy scarecrow like sack-faced demon that is forcing the men from the ’07 champion Purgatory High hockey team to pull out their organs. The first victim had the unfortunate nickname of B-Train that Wynonna makes fun of the entire episode, and his buddy Perry (Patrick Kwon-Choon) is a handsome dude whom Wynonna might have a little crush on. Only Perry is into some dark shit, like skinning and draining the blood from rabbits. When Waverly figures out that the demon brings both good and bad fortune and uses the trophy as a vessel, they figure out how to catch it. Doc (Tim Rozon) decides they need to capture and not kill the demon because they need its blood to try to keep Dolls (Shamier Anderson) alive.

Another ’07 team member, Skip (Scott Olynek), has been arrested for drunk driving and is in a holding cell. The demon comes for him, but officer Haught tries to fight it back. She takes a beating and is saved by Doc, Wynonna, and Perry getting there. Perry goes after the demon to try to stop it—turns out all that blood play was him trying a spell to protect himself and his friends—using an old protection spell that doesn’t work. Only Wynonna Earp can handle this demon! The demon offers to grant her anything she wants if she spares it, and Melanie Scrofano demonstrates her amazing acting abilities because you can see Wynonna think about Dolls in that moment, but then she wishes for the demon to get back in the trophy, ending the curse and saving Perry and Skip. Wynonna and Perry share a kiss shortly after, but they both know they won’t work out and amicably part ways.

Pervy Privileged Entitled Whiteboys Suck | At homecoming we meet Tucker Gardner (Caleb Ellsworth-Clark), Mercedes’ (Dani Kind) pervy younger brother. Nicole catches him taking photos up girls skirts and arrests him. Waverly warns her against it, but Nicole ignores her girlfriend.

Later Tucker is released to his sister, Beth (Meghan Heffern), and Nedley (Greg Lawson) tells Nicole no charges are being pressed against the boy. Nicole can’t believe Nedley is letting this boy get away with this! Nedley tries to explain it away by saying his parents were important people in Purgatory, and that “boys will be boys.”

Later, Waverly comes across Tucker on the street. He talks down to her because of her sexuality and tells her that she’s just confused. Gooverly makes a full appearance and picks Tucker up by his scrawny little chicken neck and only let’s go after she steals his shiny medical bracelet off his wrist.

When Tucker later tells his sisters about Waverly, Mercedes warns him to leave the Earp’s alone. Yay, they finally have someone standing up for them! Unfortunately, Mercedes soon after gets attacked by whatever those faceless ladies in black are, and the last you hear from her is a sickening crack.

Nedley Gives Nicole The Low-Down | While Nicole is cleaning up the window her head went through Nedley comes in and explains Purgatory to her. Yes, it’s inhabited by demons, and yes, most people know it. But no one wants to admit it, so they all ignore it and go about their lives. He tells Nicole he wants her to take over as Sheriff after he retires, because she’s the best there is. He really truly believes in her and wants her to succeed. She seems taken aback by his belief in her, but already has a few ideas. She gets permission to work with BBD when things get crazy, and she finally gets Nedley to axe the khakis. Finally, Nedley gives Nicole a file on Tucker Gardner, he’s been building a case against the kid for a while.

Doc Makes Drugs | Doc and Rosita (Tamara Duarte) are busy working on reverse engineering Dolls’ drug formula, but they need pure demon blood to make it. Hence Doc wanting to capture but not kill the demon. He finally fills Wynonna in on everything, but informs her they were supposed to make the drop 2 days ago but the drugs aren’t ready. And what’s worse, Dolls can’t come back to Purgatory to get them without risking his life.

Cut to Dolls, in the Earp’s barn, which is in Purgatory. He’s risking his life, and thinks he’s saved when he sees who he thinks is Waverly. But it’s really Gooverly, and she’s adding to her pile of shiny metal objects and ignoring him.

Other Great Moments:

  • We learn even more Waverly backstory! She was valedictorian, but missed her speech because Champ was playing video games.
  • We also learn a little more about the Gardner’s, their parents left most of their money to Purgatory. Tucker has been irresponsible with his share so Mercedes is cutting him off.
  • Doc is helping Dolls for Wynonna, he is such a good!
  • Seeing Waverly hit the books and figure things out again was really nice.

Wynonna Earp airs Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
