Friday nights have turned into one of the best nights for television this summer, partially due to Syfy‘s Wynonna Earp for being in the mix. Season 2 kicked off last week in a new setting with some new faces, and now in episode 2 everything is starting to settle down in Purgatory again. But things don’t stay calm for long; Wynonna, Waverly and the others face some big struggles and have a hard time avoiding the goo. “Shed Your Skin” was written by Alex Zarowny and directed by Brett Sullivan.
“Never touch the goo.” | The episode kicks off all hot and steamy with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Doc (Tim Rozon) in a decontamination shower together. Lucado (Kate Drummond) is also there and isn’t pleased with Wynonna’s paperwork. Apparently describing something as “whatever gooed us stunk of living anus and was harrier than a pre-waxed Nedley” isn’t considered professional by the BBD or something? Anyway, Lucado is pissed that she’s stuck in Purgatory until their contract with BBD is fulfilled, but Wynonna and her team hasn’t spotted any Revenants since Bobo died, making fulfilling that contract pretty hard.
Elsewhere, a man is in a port-o-potty at a construction site, when suddenly something attacks him in the potty. Now, the man WAS sitting down in the port-o-potty on the actual seat, so some may argue he had what happened next coming. His friend hears him screaming and opens the door to find lots of spiderwebs.
At the Purgatory Police Station, Nicole (Katherine Barrell) is dealing with a case about some missing workers, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything she can do about it right now. Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) is there as well, watching her girlfriend work. Waves tries to be cute and gets in Nicole’s way, but Nicole is clearly still upset she’s not part of BBD and leaves. Just before Waverly leaves, we see her steal the silver bell off of the desk. Maybe she’s starting a new bell collection?
“In other news, I found Jesus.” | Jeremy (Varun Saranga) is trying to develop an algorithm to track the demons that came into the Ghost River Triangle after the season 1 finale, but it’s not going well. Wynonna asks Doc for help, but for some reason he can’t. He seems very suspicious of something. Waverly brings up the creepy condo site where workers keep disappearing, maybe they should check it out? But Lucado is a fun sucker so she shoots that idea down and tells Waves to follow up on Jeremy’s research. Lucado pulls Wynonna aside and reminds her what happened to Agent Eliza in the premiere, if they’re not successful with this mission they all die. Suddenly Wynonna sees a file with the name Mercedes Gardner on it and is intrigued.
It turns out Mercedes (Dani Kind) is like Wynonna’s only “friend” from high school, and by friend I mean they were joined in sisterhood by their loose morals in their adolescence. Mercedes comes from money and is back in Purgatory because she’s trying to fix the old town up and everything is super cheap since the poisoning. According to Mercedes, the “missing” workers are just men who have run off the site, she doesn’t think they’re actually missing. But this is Purgatory so Wynonna’s got to go inside the old building and check it out.
Wynonna finally spots a Revenant inside the construction site, Earl (Sam Duke). As she’s confronting him she suddenly smells her mother’s perfume, Shalidelle, and turns around to see a strange figure in a black veiled dress at the end of the hall. She thinks it may be Willa. She turns back around to deal with Earl, but of course he is gone. She chases after him and instead finds a giant egg sack.

“Come on, kung-fu princess!” | After what seems like several voicemails in an attempt to get Doc to come help her, Wynonna starts dissecting the egg on her own. She is obviously disgusted by it, but suddenly she smells the perfume again. She turns around ready to fight, but it’s just Waverly.
We finally check in with Doc to get an idea of what he’s doing. He’s at Shorty’s with Nedley (Greg Lawson), who offers the bar to him if he’s willing and able to pay for its upkeep. Doc says he will find a way for it, and is now the new owner of Shorty’s. There is nothing that makes me happier than knowing we will get a season full of Doc scenes inside the old bar.
Back to the gross giant egg sack, Waverly has taken over dissection duties and seems to be really enjoying this part of the job. Waverly and Wynonna use this time to have a little sister bonding time, catching up about Lucado, Jeremy, and Nicole, when suddenly a GIANT SPIDER-LIKE CREATURE jumps out of the egg and attacks! They trap it under a trashcan Waverly is perched on top of until they figure out a plan, which is basically jump off and shoot the damn thing! It works, they kill it and jar it up to go to Lucado. Wynonna has decided they’re going back to doing things their way, not Lucado’s.
*NEW CHARACTER ALERT* Doc meets up with a pretty lady named Rosita (Tamara Duarte) in an alleyway, inquiring about some proposition he previously made. Whatever it is he wants, she says it’s too expensive and almost impossible to do. She tells him she doesn’t need money or anything else, that her answer is still no. Doc takes a pen and writes his final offer on her palm as he walks away, “protection.”
“I am woman. I made fire.” | Back at the Homestead, there’s a lot going on. First, Jeremy scares Wynonna, who uses the only thing at her disposal as a weapon, an umbrella. He is there to examine the creepy jar alien, but turns into the biggest fanboy when he realizes Doc Holliday is coming over.
Next, we get a peak into Willa’s childhood journal as Waverly reads aloud all the awful things her older sister wrote about her to Nicole. She finally tells Nicole what she’s been so nervous about, she might not be an Earp. Nicole thinks that’s crazy and kisses her, but Wynonna has awful timing and interrupts, prompting Nicole to leave. Wynonna sees their mother’s perfume sitting out and loses it, she thinks Willa is haunting her. I mean, you did kill her, so it’s definitely possible! Waves points out that Willa’s room is basically a shrine to her, maybe its time to destroy it.
Waverly and Wynonna interrupt an awkward moment between Jeremy and Doc by carrying all of Willa’s belongings outside and setting fire to it all.
After using the majority of the whiskey to make her “all boozy inside”, Wynonna goes to Doc. They talk about Dolls (Shamier Anderson), and it is obvious that even now Wynonna is torn by her feelings for the two men. She tries to kiss Doc, but he rejects her, prompting a fight. Finally Jeremy figures out what the creature is, and realizes it has siblings.
“Stupid Earl!” | Mercedes was trapped by the spider creatures, luckily she has the Earp sister’s to rescue her! Once out of danger, Waverly offers some Peach Schnapps she has in her bag–thank god she upgraded her alcohol preferences this season!
Wynonna knows Earl is still in the building and goes to look for him and all the other spider babies. She finds Earl, who just wants to live his life and not get sent back to Hell. When Wynonna reveals there may be a way to break the curse, something comes over Earl and he says then he can “protect it.” Protect what, buddy?!? He shows Wynonna around, and they come across an old chapel. Wynonna knocks out “Stupid Earl,” and Waverly joins her for some egg smashing.
But before we can break eggs we have to talk about the SEXY scene between Doc and Lucado! Doc managed to steal Lucado’s files and she wants them back. He found some incriminating evidence on her and wants her to invest in Shorty’s as a way to keep him quiet. There is so much sexual tension and chemistry between the two, Kate and Tim did a fantastic job conveying it through the camera. We also learn Lucado’s first name, thanks to the stached man. Jeannie Lucado.
Back to the badass egg-breaking sisters. They destroy all the eggs they find and stroll out looking like total badasses. The Earp sisters slow motion strutting down a hallway twirling goo covered weapons is my new sexuality. Mercedes is thankful the sisters saved her, now she has to go stay with her siblings Beth and Tucker, they’re ruined the family fortune and she needs to fix it. As they leave we see the figure in black again, but this time it is joined by another. The first one removes its veil, revealing some sort of faceless being behind it.
“Once an Earp, always an Earp.” | Back at the office Wynonna fills a half-listening Lucado in on what happened. According to Jeremy, that creature is usually submerged in water. They suddenly realize there’s probably still something in the building, and whatever it is it draws supernatural beings it.
Rosita has decided to take Doc up on his offer, apparently she needs protection from something. After seeing the bar and shitting on his taste in alcohol she asks to be shown the “real setup,” proving Doc is up to something.
Wynonna and Waverly go back to the construction site and find Stupid Earl, dead, but something has been let out.
Later at the Homestead, Waverly has redecorated Willa’s room, turning it into her own, when Nicole surprises her. She got Waverly applications for forms that can prove whether she’s an Earp or not. And here is where things get way hot for WayHaught! After a brief discussion where there is consent–CONSENT IS SEXY–the two finally consummate their relationship. And guess what? No one died after! Thank you Emily Andras and Alex Zarowny for not perpetuating the Bury Your Gays Trope!!!
Wynonna and Doc have moved on from their fight, and Wynonna meets him at Shorty’s. She has a feeling something bad is coming to Purgatory, but Doc dismisses it. He goes downstairs where we see Rosita, and it is revealed they are trying to reverse engineer something.
When Wynonna gets back, she walks in on Waverly at the kitchen table. Waves quickly hides Willa’s journal–guess that didn’t get destroyed–and Wynonna informs her that all of Willa’s stuff has been destroyed, besides an old bear that she’s decided to keep. Waverly is very much okay with her oldest sister being dead, but Wynonna is still struggling with it. As soon as Wynonna leaves to go sit on the porch Waverly decides it is time for a post-coital snack, when Gooverly makes an appearance and EATS THE SPIDER CREATURE! I guess protein is protein.
Are all you WayHaught shippers still breathing??? What about Doc fans? Have you recovered from his sex appeal? This episode had it all! It was fun, sexy, scary, and gooey! What do you think will happen in next week’s all new episode?
Wynonna Earp airs on Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
