“Wynonna Earp” Recap: Welcome Home, Earpers

Earpers rejoice, our show is back and it feels like home! It returned with quite a bang, and OMFGTV is here to bring you all the coverage! Wynonna Earp‘s season 2 premiere contained everything fans loved from the first season, the Earp sisters, WayHaught, and some Doc/Dolls bromance. “Steel Bars and Stone Walls” was written by the brilliant Emily Andras, and was directed by Brett Sullivan, and here is what went down!

“We haven’t formally met, I’m Wynonna. Wynonna Earp.” | The episode picks up immediately where the season 1 finale left off, and answers one big cliffhanger immediately. Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) did shoot the gun at the end of season 1, but not at Doc (Tim Rozon) or Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano). The youngest Earp was shooting at a monster behind them, off-camera. Now Doc and Waverly are running from the beast. Doc loses his hat in the battle with the monster (RIP hat), and Wynonna comes in guns-a-blazin’ and puts the monster down. She realizes more things are getting into the Ghost River Triangle now than just Revenants. Now that she’s killed some sort of demon, she thinks she can use it as a bargaining tool to get Dolls (Shamier Anderson) back from the Black Badge Division, more specifically Lucado (Kate Drummond).

Last Favor | We get a brief glimpse of what Dolls is going through with the BBD. A second cliffhanger from season 1 is addressed when we see Dolls get the missile strike Lucado ordered on Purgatory called off. But he used the last of his favors to get that done, now he will be transferred to Black Rock Prison. Then, just to be a dick, Lucado tases him.

“You have amazing taste in underwear.” | Wynonna walks into work and overheard Nedley (Greg Lawson) explaining to citizens that Bobo poisoned the drinks because he was Wynonna’s jilted lover. A lie that’s easy enough for the people of Purgatory to believe, given Wynonna’s reputation. Once Wynonna and Nedley are alone, Nedley shows his softer side and refers to a Batman quote when telling Wynonna she’s doing a good job despite what citizens may think. “You may be the hero Purgatory deserves. You’re just not the one it needs right now.” Suddenly, Wynonna smells something weird and is informed that BBD found a dead possum in the vents. They’re cleaning, which means they’re probably looking for his files. Too bad they’re not there.

Wynonna tracks down the motel Dolls has been staying in and goes to look for his files, but is greeted by a beautiful woman in her underwear instead. After a sexy skirmish, Wynonna discovers the woman’s name is Eliza (Rachel Skarsten), she’s also BBD. She was with Dolls, but claims not to know who Wynonna is, which Wynonna gets thrown by. She also doesn’t seem to think Wynonna is a big deal since she was able to take her down with a lamp. But when Wynonna fills Eliza in about Dolls, the BBD Agent looks shaken. She has his files, they need to team up to get him back.

Taste the Rainbow | Roles have reversed and Waverly is now patching her girlfriend, Nicole (Katherine Barrell), up. Things begin to turn physical between the two, but don’t go very far due to Nicole’s injury. Nicole also notices something else, Waverly “taste(s) different.” Doc politely interrupts and has a quick back and forth with Waverly, during this time Nicole looks lost in thought. Doc and Waverly are both worried about Wynonna, but Doc is also concerned with Waverly’s well-being. Waverly just says she’s feeling fine and strong after the death of her oldest sister.

Caged I | Dolls has been locked in a cage. His eyes are yellow and he is clearly struggling to control whatever he is.

Planning a Rescue Mission | Back at the Homestead, everyone is together prepping for their rescue mission. Eliza is going to use her credentials to get them into the BBD facility, but they can’t bring any guns. None are allowed on the property. Wynonna wants to make sure the 62 remaining Revenants are tracked down, so she puts Waverly and Off- I’m sorry, newly deputized Agent Haught–as she points out–in charge of that since Bobo is no longer around to keep them in line.

What happens next is a perfect example of the heart of this show, and that’s the bond between the Earp sister’s. Waves pulls her big sister aside to make sure Wynonna is taking care of herself. Wynonna tries to flip the conversation by asking Waverly if Bobo did anything to her, but the youngest Earp deflects. All the sister’s want is for the other to be okay and safe, and that’s what this show is all about.

Before heading to BBD they make a stop at the police station to break into Dolls’ safe, discovering he doesn’t have his medicine, luckily Doc has a small amount. Wynonna doesn’t know Dolls isn’t human, not until now.

With a bit of creativity, they manage to get into the Black Badge Division. But things don’t go as smoothly as they had hoped.

Gooverly’s First Appearance | Nicole and Waverly are in the barn, discussing the possibility of Nicole cutting her hair, when suddenly Waverly’s eyes go black. And oh yeah, she’s holding an ax above her head right behind Nicole. Luckily, it’s the dead demons head she’s after and not Nicole’s. The whole thing really freaks Nicole out, she’s obviously worried about Waves.

Plan B | Eliza’s credentials stop working, BBD knows they’re there. Wynonna calls Waves and tells her she’s Plan B. Waverly then takes it upon herself to create a whole new persona to get into BBD. She dresses like a sexy librarian and with an awful British accent sells herself as Scotland Yard. She brings along the demons head as proof, it works and she gets directions to the BBD lab.

Caged II | Lucado is outside Dolls’ cage, taunting him. But she answers another question left from last season, why she hates Dolls. It turns out Dolls was on a mission with her husband and Eliza, and her husband ended up dying.

Rule #1: No Bleeding in the Lab | Waverly gets inside the lab and is greeted by Jeremy (Varun Saranga), and notices they already have one of those demons along with much more. Waves uses her charm to convince Jeremy to open all the doors in the facility at once, freeing her sister and friends. At this point, Eliza admits she knows who Wynonna is, and who she is to Dolls. Then she reveals that she’s the same creature as Dolls. Doc slips out the unlocked door while the ladies are preoccupied and locks it behind him. He goes after Dolls alone.

In the lab, Waverly proves just how hard it really is to knock someone out when she tries to knock Jeremy out by hitting him in the head. It doesn’t work, instead he just bleeds. Too bad the living demon is attracted to blood. And what kind of demon is it? The kind that devours your soul, of course! Waves decides to come clean to Jeremy about who she really is. It turns out Jeremy loves Dolls and agrees to help.

“How do ya like my mustache now?” | Doc finds Dolls, but Lucado is waiting (and foolishly insults his mustache). She breaks the rules and draws a gun, but Doc came prepared. He’s strapped with dynamite. Yes, Doc finally gets to play with his favorite toy! He forces Lucado to apologize just before Dolls grabs her through the cage, knocking her out. Finally, Doc is able to free Dolls. Doc gives Dolls what he has of his medicine, and since there is no needle Dolls just puts it in his eye–OUCH! Dolls tells Doc a secret message, and says it’s for “her.” Doc and Dolls separate in order for Dolls to get away, Doc stays back to fight.

Eliza, Jeremy, Waves, and Wynonna run into Lucado. She brings Doc out, who got captured by her men, and is about to kill someone when her superior steps in. He is upset Lucado has a gun inside BBD, as does Wynonna. Wynonna uses this moment to remind everyone who she is. “I brought my magic gun to remind you all that I’m the god damn Earp heir, and the only one who can send Wyatt’s Revenants back to Hell!” Lucado’s boss kills Eliza to show who is in charge, hint hint it’s not them. He forces them all to sign contracts, cementing them as part of BBD until their duties are filled. What duties? Oh you know, just capturing about dozen “demonic horrors.” The catch? No one else can know what they’re really up to, which means Nicole, who is waiting in the getaway car, has to leave and pretend she was never deputized.

As they’re leaving BBD Wynonna asks Doc is Dolls had a message for her, but Doc says no. He is very upset he didn’t get to use his dynamite.

When they get back to the Homestead Wynonna invites Doc inside while she showers, insinuating she wants something more, but he’s a gentleman and turns her down. Nicole is sorry she left everyone at BBD, but Waves is relieved because Nicole is safer this way. She would have been killed, or made BBD. But it wasn’t worth the risk to Waverly.

Wynonna finally gets a moment to herself where she can finally breathe and feel everything. And trust us, Wynonna crying will break you.

Remember when she lost her necklace in BBD? Well, she spots it on her land and goes to retrieve it, spotting Dolls in the distance. He’s crying as he turns to leave Purgatory.

“No matter what they say, I only really have one job now. Keeping my baby sister safe.” | What’s next for our team? Hunt down everything that got into the Ghost River Triangle, how fun! But the Earp sister’s will have each other’s backs no matter what.

The last shot we see is of Doc’s dynamite on top of a crate in BBD. Suddenly a hand comes out of the crate next to it, grabs it, and creates a spark to ignite it.

What an amazing season premiere! It was extremely well rounded, touching on all the characters and what they are up to, and most importantly it was fun! But where does this leave them for the rest of the season? Leave your predictions for the rest of the season below!

Don’t forget to watch Wynonna Earp Friday’s at 10pm on Syfy (U.S.)and Space (Canada)!
