VAMPIRE DIARIES: THE EIGHTH AND FINAL SEASON SPECIAL FEATURES:
Come Visit Georgia PSA
This featurette offers a fascinating look at how The Vampire Diaries called Georgia home. “We had said to the studio we want small town, we want east coast, we said we want North Carolina or Georgia, and they said, ‘You’re going to Canada!’ explains TVD Co-Creator/EP Julie Plec. “We were about 9/10s of the way through shooting the pilot in Canada when we got a call from the studio saying, ‘Congratulations. We’ve worked it out with the state of Georgia. When your show goes to series, you’ll be able to shoot in Georgia,” and we were thrilled.” The segment also shows how Covington, Georgia became Mystic Falls.
The Vampire Diaries: 2016 Comic-Con Panel
OMFGTV was there when it all started, when TVD made its first appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, where they screened the series premiere followed by a panel where we were first introduced to the cast and producers. We were there again in 2016 for their last panel ever, where they announced that the eighth season would be its last. That final panel is included here, where we get to see the shocking announcement and witness the cast an EPs tear up as they say their goodbyes to a live audience.
Deleted Scenes
The set includes a few deleted scenes spread throughout the discs. Here are brief descriptions of some of them: Damon hopes for good news from Bonnie but gets a warning instead, Caroline is overwhelmed by her daughters’ witch powers; Bonnie uses her powers to bring Enzo back from her psychic realm; Stefan offers bench-side advice to Bonnie; Bonnie’s link to Enzo is severed; and much more.
Last Days As A Vampire
Finally, this in-depth featurette features interviews with the cast and EPs as they reminisce about their time working on the series. It also shows the emotional final days of the cast on set as they wrap for good. Fans will love this featurette and will appreciate that these special moments of the cast saying their thanks and farewells to their fellow cast members and hard-working crew were documented. It’s worth purchasing the Blu-Ray/DVD set just to get to watch this featurette alone.
Missing from the bonus features is a gag reel. How could they not include a gag reel? We suspect they might be saving that special feature for the entire series collection.

Our favorite episodes of the season have been marked with an asterisk.
Going into Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries knowing it was their last, the producers and writers of the series had a great advantage. This allowed for The CW’s supernatural drama to tie up any loose ends, bring back fan-favorite characters, and still be able to deliver those final, shocking twists.
Season 8 presented its viewers with its most formidable villains yet in the form of two Sirens — Sybil and Seline — and the devil — Arcadius. Their time in Mystic Falls kept our heroes busy dying over and over again as well as playing with their humanity switches. It’s a wonder how the vampires are able to switch off their humanity in a simple second, yet takes so much effort to turn it back on.
The final season also did a great job and reminding us of about the young heroine who started it all — Elena. Though her portrayer Nina Dobrev doesn’t make an appearance until the series finale, Elena shows up in nearly every episode through flashbacks, which in turn makes for a big pay off when she does show up in the final episode.
When OMFGTV spoke with Julie Plec in 2016, she told us that the series finale would be close-ended and be a great one. She likened it to the series finale of NBC’s Friday Night Lights. She even shared that TVD star Paul Wesley suggested a Sopranos-like ender where the screen cuts to black. Thankfully she was against that idea, and TVD ended on a good note.
Aside from the constant plays with humanity with several of the characters throughout the season making us groan, the final season of The Vampire Diaries felt like any other season (a good thing), but sprinkled with welcome surprises, surprising twists, and a very satisfying finale. It’s the end of an era, and they will all be missed.
