Having left the safety of being Cat Grant’s assistant at Catco Worldwide Media in order to figure out what she really wants to do, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) continues to work with Hank Henshaw aka Martian Manhunter (David Harewood) and her adoptive sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) at the DEO as Supergirl – protecting the citizens of National City and searching for her missing father Jeremiah (Dean Cain) and the secret research lab Cadmus. Along the way, she will team up with her Kryptonian cousin Kal El – aka Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) – to battle new DC Super-Villains both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, as she strives to balance her personal life with friends/allies James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) and more with her busy life as a new Super Hero in SUPERGIRL Season Two.

Even after moving to a new network, losing a series regular, and relocating to a new filming location, nothing slowed down “Supergirl” in its second season. The much improved and surprisingly thoughtful sophomore outing for the superhero series delivered a fantastic season that took creative risks, introduced new dynamics and characters that were instantly well received and further explored the characters viewers already fell in love with.

While the first season of “Supergirl” was very much a optimistic and traditional comic book series, season 2 reflected the times a lot more. This season tackled issues of immigration, acceptance of the “other,” prejudice against certain races, and miraculously, made it all work for the story. With more alien characters introduced, including an alien bar for everyone to hang out, the show opened the doors to tackle complex issues of acceptance and even more admirably, presented both sides of the argument.

This also impacted our heroes in a clever way. Kara met Mon-El, who she instantly wrote off due to him being from Daxam, a planet who rivaled Krypton. Over the season, not only did she learn to love him for who he was, but Mon-El changed his ways because of the influence Kara had on him.

And of course, there was Alex’s coming out of the closet and falling for Maggie Sawyer, which was a true highlight of the season. Not only did this work for the season’s themes of embracing who you are, but it gave Alex a powerful and emotional arc this season that paid dividend after dividend.

The season had a few issues- James got sidelined for most of the season and the Jeremiah Danvers storyline went under utilized- but they ultimately were forgivable in light of how enjoyable each episode was. “Supergirl” got topical and more creative in season 2 and it paid off in spades, reinventing while also adding more to the mythology.
