We finally see Vanessa in this week’s episode of SYFY’s Van Helsing! She is stuck in the Dark Realm and pulls Axel in to help her get through a mysterious doorway. ‘The Doorway’ was written by Neil LaBute and directed by Alexandra La Roche. Let’s re-live some of Vanessa’s worst times!
Pulled In | The episode kicks off with Violet (Keeya King) and Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) arguing over who is going to take first watch. Violet wins and stays up while Axel goes to sleep. While sleeping, his subconscious gets pulled into the Dark Realm where he sees a faceless creature protecting a strange doorway.
He sees Vanessa (Kelly Overton) with her throat cut and helps her inside to heal. Once healed she explains to him where they are, and why it looks like an old farmhouse. This is the place Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) killed Susan (Hilary Jardine), and where she wishes she had killed Sam. We see the flashback of her finding Susan’s body and the confrontation she has with Sam and Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro).
Catching Up | Vanessa and Axel try to figure out how he’s there, and he realizes that means Violet is alone. He fills Vanessa in on what’s been going on, and she doesn’t think Violet and Jack can take on the Dark One. She’s afraid she’ll lose them just like she lost Dylan (Hannah Cheramy): cue the flashback of when Dylan died.
Always There | Axel tries to stop Vanessa from storming the doorway and getting ripped to shreds by the monster when he figures out why he’s there. She’s in control of this place, he’s there because she wanted him to be. She realizes this is true, she wished he was there the last time she was fighting the creature. She realizes Axel has always been there for her when she truly needed. We see several flashbacks of the two of them finding each other when they needed it most.
Darkness Within | Now that Vanessa realizes she has some control, she thinks she created this place as an escape route out of the Dark Realm. Axel must be there to help her figure out whatever it is she needs to figure out, and hopefully they can get by the monster and through the door.
Once outside and ready to face the monster, Vanessa realizes she’s always had darkness inside of her, and has a flashback to her childhood and meeting Darkness. Then several more flashbacks of that darkness, until it was revealed to be The Oracle (Jesse Stanley). And then a flashback to Scarlett’s (Missy Peregrym) death, with The Oracle right beside her.

Vanessa’s got it figured out, and goes to confront the monster. She knows it’s her own darkness, and she’s right. The monster transforms into Dark Vanessa, who thinks she can’t be controlled. But Dark Vanessa is very wrong, and Vanessa merges with her and takes control. Now the doorway opens and they can leave. Axel will wake up where he was with Violet, and Vanessa will be headed to D.C., but she can’t go as herself to Axel gives her the perfect disguise.
New Face | Axel wakes up to a very worried Violet, and he fills her in on what happened. Violet wants to know where Vanessa is and how they’re going to find her. Axel isn’t too worried, he knows Vanessa has a plan. And her plan is a new face, she uses her new powers to disguise herself as Nina (Ali Liebert). Now the Dark One won’t know she’s there.
