We’re back in the present on SYFY’s Van Helsing, but thanks to what Jack did in the past the present is a little different. We finally get to check in on the rest of the gang and see what they’re up to and if they’re surviving. ‘State of the Union’ was written by Jeremy Smith and Matt Venables and directed by Leslie Hope. Let’s dive into what happened in this crazy episode!

Getting Out | Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and Julius (Aleks Paunovic) have been rescued by Doc (Rukiya Bernard). She’s treating their injuries inside of the lab she used to work in. She explains to Axel how there is a new orange chemical that killed most of the vampires, but the ones it didn’t kill turned into crazy powerful daywalking vampires. And oh yeah, it hurts and kills humans too. That’s what she’s treating the men for. Axel recovers quickly, but Julius is struggling. Doc has to use an AED on him at one point when he’s crashing. Once he’s regained consciousness he tries to tell her that they have to help Violet and Jack, but Doc needs him to rest and puts him back to sleep.

Before that Doc had been working on creating some bullets with the orange chemical on the tip in hopes that they would kill the new mutant vamps. And it’s a good thing she did, because there’s been a security breach and one of the vamps figured out how to get in and let in all his buddies. The biggest and baddest of them being the former boss of the lab and the one who created the orange chemical.

Doc and Axel end up trapped inside a small locked chamber, and they argue over who’s going to sacrifice themselves to give the other a chance at surviving. Doc wins the argument and is about to go out and face her former boss when Julius kills the vamp. He used the bullet Doc made and shot it in the head. Looks like the bullets work!

Axel gets a radio call and knows what they need to do next. He and Julius set out with a box of Doc’s bullets to look for Violet, Doc decides not to go with them and instead goes to find Jolene.

And she does find her, and they have a heartfelt reunion before loading up on a bus and leaving together.

Fake President | Violet (Keeya King) and Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) are being held prisoner in Fort Collins for their attempted assassination attempt on the President. Violet tries to explain to Sgt. Weathers (Luvia Petersen) that the President isn’t actually the President, but she isn’t believed.

President Archer (Jill Teed) who we know is really Dracula (Tricia Helfer), orders the execution of Violet and Ivory. She wants their heads.

Violet and Ivory attempt to escape by having Violet fake suicide then turning on the officer. It worked, Violet ended up with the guard’s keycard and is able to let herself and Ivory out and into a room holding security footage. When they’re caught they convince Sgt. Weathers to view the footage they found, proving the President is really Dracula.

The Fake President addresses the nation and declares Martial Law, setting a curfew and allowing law enforcement to search anyone without a warrant.

Sgt. Weathers is now on their side and will do whatever she can to take down this fake President, including giving Violet and Ivory supplies and a four hour lead ahead of the people who will inevitably be hunting them. But before they leave, Violet accidentally lets out a little black wisp from the amulet. That can’t be good.

Dracula and Bathory (Jesse Stanley) are lounging in the capitol after snacking on a few aides when Bathory has a vision of her death. She lies to her master and goes to address her cards to see what is going to happen. She first draws the Death and Fool cards, but after that she continuously pulls cards that read Jack, Violet, and Vanessa. The Van Helsing’s have something to do with her fate.

Dracula is alone when that black wisp Violet let out returns to her. She feels some of her powers return, and is able to conjure up something evil that she sends out to do her bidding.

Van Helsing airs Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
