“Van Helsing” Season Finale Recap: Meet The Dark One

Friday night wrapped up what has been my personal favorite season of Van Helsing on SYFY. Leading up to the finale this season has brought several new faces, including Jack and Violet, who found out they’re Vanessa’s children and probably the key to ending this whole vampire apocalypse thing. Ivory started out the season leading The Sisterhood with Scab, but after his death Ivory gets turned human and falls for Jack. The Dark One is still plotting and playing her dark tricks. Vanessa seems to be trapped in The Dark Realm, and Axel and Julius are too busy protecting others to help her. We also had the rise and fall of Sam The Elder. ‘The Beholder’ was written by Jonathan Walker and SJ Trohimchuk, and directed by Shannon Kohli. Here’s how the season wrapped up!

The Sunshine Unit | Madam President (Jill Teed) wants the Colonel (Aaron Douglas) and his men to check out the Sunshine Unit, they’ve been unresponsive for several days. Julius (Aleks Paunovic) knows this is where Doc was sent, so he volunteers to go. Axel’s (Jonathan Scarfe) a soldier, so there’s no way he’s staying behind when there’s a mission to do.

When they arrive at the perimeter of the Sunshine Unit they see no signs of struggle and notice power is still on. Thinking the crew may be in the main building, they set off in that direction and fail to see the half hidden sign warning of biohazard testing.

They come across a field covered in a strange orange powder. In the field are several dead Day Walkers with their heads still attached. The powder must have killed them, it definitely has an effect on Julius after he sniffs it. Suddenly a mutant Day Walker springs up in the field and begins killing the squad. Once only Axel and Julius remain the mutant Day Walker wails on them, but Axel is eventually able to cut his head off. Julius and Axel are safe for the time being, but they realize they aren’t healing and they’re mortally wounded. They head for the unit’s main facility as fast as they can.

They reach the building, but it’s locked. Julius collapses and dies right outside the doors. Axel pleads to Doc, who he hopes is inside, to open the door and help them. He dies, then the camera moves.

The Dark Realm | After Jack (Nicole Muñoz) and Violet (Keeya King) went through the portal they went to the Dark Realm, where they finally face the Dark One.

The Sisters can hear Vanessa’s (Kelly Overton) voice calling to them, guiding them to tombs. Violet opens one hoping to find Vanessa, but she’s not there. Jack suddenly hears another voice beckoning to her, she follows it and Violet follows her. They enter a room with the Dark One (Tricia Helfer), who invites them to sit at the table and hear the truth. Jack seems to be more interested in what the Dark One is telling them than Violet.

The Dark Ones show the sisters how they were truly created, by her giving Willem (Dakota Daulby) the ability to make them with two women. Jack believes what she’s seeing, but Violet doesn’t buy it. She believes Hanson told them the truth.

The Dark One touches a mark on Jack’s arm and she suddenly has full control over Jack. She tells Violet that she’s been a part of Jack for a long time, and that Violet played right into her trap. It turns out the Dark One was the source of her prophetic dreams, and it was her in them and not Vanessa.

The Dark One then finds the spell page Violet has been carrying and knows its her way out.

She’s Gone | Violet wakes up in a hospital bed, restrained. She struggles to get free to see her sister, but gets sedated.

Jack wakes up also in a hospital bed, not restrained, with Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) at her side. She tells the President and everyone else what happened in the Dark Realm, but it’s not accurate. She seems confused when the President brings up her special ability, and tells them, “She’s gone. She’s gone forever” when asked if they killed the Dark One.

The President wants to take Jack elsewhere to speak and work, but Jack asks to see her sister before leaving. While alone, Jack thanks Violet for getting her there, revealing that she is really the Dark One. So Violet is trapped while the Dark One runs free impersonating Jack.

Fake Jack and the President are alone in a room speaking about the safe place they will be headed. Fake Jack seems very interested in the amount of power a President has, then kills her and impersonates her.

Fake President decides she needs to set Avery (Anna Galvin) free, and breaks Ivory’s neck when she tries to stop her. When Ivory wakes up, she knows something is up and rescues Violet. The pair rush after Fake President, Violet telling Ivory that Jack is still in the Dark Realm on the way. Before the pair can take the helicopter down several armed military men shoot at and surround them.

Suddenly, Jack wakes up inside of a tomb in an area of what looks like thousands of identical tombs. She panics and hears, “Don’t lose hope. I’m right here.” It’s Vanessa’s voice.

Van Helsing has been renewed for its fifth and final season, which will air in 2020 on SYFY!
