“Van Helsing” Recap: The Warden
In the most recent episode of Van Helsing we finally get to see what Axel’s been up to! We also get to meet the Warden of the prison, who you may recognize as Richard Harmon from CW’s The 100. ‘Love Less’ was written by Jackie May and directed by Jacquie Gould, here’s what happened.
“Life is shit” | The episode opens with us finally getting a glimpse of Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and what he’s been up to since Scarlett’s death. He’s been drowning his feelings in alcohol and looks much harder than when we last saw him. Axel sees a convertible pass him and sees that the driver may need help with a Day Walker that’s in his backseat. Axel takes the kill shot and the guy introduces himself as Max Borman, then he asks Axel for a ride when his car doesn’t start. Axel agrees and definitely isn’t disappointed that he did. Max is living in the lap of luxury, with a huge house and tons of sports cars. He’s clearly thriving during the apocalypse, and offers Axel a case of alcohol to work on a car he wants fixed.
Max clearly enjoys the party lifestyle, he snorts a blue drug that supposedly keeps the vamps away. Then he makes Axel an offer, deliver booze and other things for Max and he will never run out of booze.

“Denver sent us” | Phil (Vincent Gale) and Jolene (Caroline Cave) make it to the prison in Loveland. They watch buses fill and leave with the sick and elderly inmates, but seem to be heading the wrong direction. Suddenly, Phil spots his wife, Jennifer (Holly Elissa).
They later sneak in and grab her, and once Jennifer sees her husband she appears almost as if she’s seen a ghost. Suddenly, they’re caught by the guard Phil had previously shot, Jeremy (Donald Sales).
Phil and Jolene are separated. Phil is chained up inside with Jeremy, who’s figured out the reason Phil broke in. Phil begs the guard not to tell anyone why he’s there. Jolene is chained up outside with Jennifer looking after her.
Phil meets the warden, who surprise surprise, is Axel’s buddy Max. Turns out Max is a complete psycho, he beats Phil and takes pleasure in it. Then Max, Jeremy and Phil go out to Jolene. Max shoots Phil and orders Jeremy to do the same to Jolene when she tells him they were sent by Blacktech in Denver to spy on him and see if he was stealing anything. Phil suddenly comes back to life after being shot and Max is intrigued.
A little later, Jolene is trying to convince Jeremy to help them because he needs to get out of there as well. He tells her that there’s a rumor that Denver has fallen but Max doesn’t know about it. Max then comes in and tells Jeremy to get Denver on the radio before trying to get more intel out of Jolene. She keeps up her lie, and it just might have saved her life. Max has decided she can work in the mines. Jeremy is never able to get through on the radio.
Axel is now at the prison, making his first delivery for Max. Jolene sees him and causes a commotion to get his attention. It works, and he next sees Phil. He doesn’t say anything to Max about knowing them, but he keeps his eyes on his friends for a long time before leaving.
“Help me” | Chad (Donny Lucas) and Jack (Nicole Muñoz) are preparing to go out on a mission to get food for their group. Chad tells Tabby (Cassidy Nugent) that she’ll be staying behind, but he promises to come back. She seems doubtful of that.
As Chad and Jack are about to go into the building they’re raiding Monica (Tammy Gillis) runs up and tells them Tabby left to look for them. At that moment a group of vampires make themselves known and they all fight. Tabby turns up, and Jack winds up getting bit protecting the girl. Jack refuses to turn into a vampire, so she plunges a knife into her own heart. Chad and Monica cut off her head and burn her body with the bodies of the vampires when they realize they’re missing one vamp body. They find the vampire that bit Jack, only she’s no longer a vampire. Jack turned her human. Cut to the dumpster containing Jack’s body–Jack, head attached and all, emerges from the flames, healing.
Jack later wakes up in pain, but mostly healed. Chad tells her about the vamp-turned-human, and says he knows of only one other person who could do that, Vanessa (Kelly Overton). Jack feels a weird pull in her chest, she needs to go find Vanessa.
