“Van Helsing” Season 4 Premiere Recap: Keeping the Light

Helsingers! Van Helsing is finally back with its fourth season and boy is it a crazy one! In the premiere we see what some of our friends are up to since leaving them last year. ‘Dark Destiny’ was written by Jonathan LloydWalker, and directed by David Winning.

Two Van Helsing’s are Better Than One | The premiere picks up right where the previous season left off, with Vanessa (Kelly Overton) and Lillian (Julie Lynn Mortensen) facing osff against Elder Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) and the Oracle (Jesse Stanley).  The Oracle stops Sam from killing both Van Helsing’s and the pair bicker, the Van Helsing women use this opportunity to sneak back into the maze and find their way back to the real world, but not before piking up the blood amulet and Scarlett’s sword. Back in the real world, Lillian realizes just how long she’s been dead for. Once the Oracle and Sam realize the Van Helsing’s are gone and have the amulet they begin to search for them, but not before The Oracle turns into her human form and lets Sam drink from her, promising her he will remain loyal. The Oracle also sends a message to Ivory (Jennifer Cheon Garcia) and The Sisters to let them know that their mother will rise soon.

Vanessa gets Lilly some modern clothes and explains to her ancestor how she had planned to become the fourth Elder to raise and kill the Dark One, so now Lilly blames Vanessa for Sam and the Oracle being on the path to freeing the Dark One. After, they decide they need the Van Helsing book so they can look up the ritual for raising the Dark One. When they find the book they read it and Lilly begins to feel faint. They rest, and Vanessa tells Lillian about her own darkness, how she was an experiment made with blood from the Dark One, and tries dumping the blood out of the amulet only to discover it magically fills back up.

Suddenly, they are attacked by a group of vampires roaming the woods. Vanessa is able to take them out, but not before Lilly gets mortally injured. Vanessa wants her great great grandmother to let a vampire bite her so she heals, then Vanessa can turn her back. But Lillian refuses, she’s ready to finally rest peacefully. Lillian Van Helsing dies. Vanessa buries her ancestor and makes her one last promise. “The light isn’t dead, but the Dark One will be.”

New Jobs | Last we left Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) and Julius (Aleks Paunovic), they were facing off with Julius trying to get the Sisters to fall into a trap, and they do. The vampires are shot with the bullets Doc (Rukiya Bernard) designed that should kill them. This allows Julius’s team to rescue the hostages, but the vampires don’t die and come right back after them. Scab and the Sisters trap Julius, and Ivory captures Callie (Macie Juiles). Scab wants Callie to watch as he humiliates Julius then plans to kill him, but Julius has other plans. He’s got a grenade in his pocket. He takes it out, pulls the pin, and slides it between Scab’s feet. It does enough damage to Scab that Julius and Callie are able to get away. Ivory tries to follow them but Doc hears them from the other side of the fence and for the first time ever, she opens the door and rescues them. This shows incredible growth for Doc, who in season 1 refused to open a door and let Axel get turned into a vampire.

They get picked up by Hansen (Neal McDonough), who sees that Julius can heal, and are taken with him. Hansen is gathering the important people and fleeing Denver, leaving instructions to disperse a neurotoxin after he leaves to kill the rest of the people trapped there.

Later, Hansen has to explain his actions in Denver to the rest of his Black Tech team and brings in Julius and Doc. He shoots Julius in the chest to demonstrate his healing ability. Doc explains who Vanessa is and about her unique ability to “reverse vampirism,” and says she can create a cure.

Once out of the room, she tells Hansen she can’t really make a cure, but Hansen thinks she can if she uses Julius as a test subject. Julius tries to escape and takes out several guards, this only inspires Hansen to give him a new job. He is now Hansen’s daughter’s sparring partner. Her name is Violet (Keeya King), and she is already a very skilled fighter, she just needs a partner she can’t break.
