“Van Helsing” Season Finale Recap: Darkness or Light

Van Helsing‘s season 3 finale was crazy! Not only did we lose two major characters, but Sam gets another evil upgrade. ‘Birth Ritual’ was written by Jonathan Walker and directed by David Winning.

Caught | The truth about what Doc (Rukiya Bernard) did to her boss gets out, but they can’t get rid of her because she’s too valuable. She’s made a poison that coats bullets.

Julius (Aleks Paunovic) is working with Denver’s military to correctly secure and take out any vamps remaining. They’re supplied with Doc’s bullets and Julius volunteers to go help out, for Frankie (). Doc begs him to take off with her in search of Jolene and Flesh, but he wants to find Frankie first. He needs to know if she’s dead or turned, and kill her if she was turned. Doc goes to gather the results from the gene sequencer, they’re finally in. Doc gets the results and seems completely shocked by the results.

Julius finds Frankie’s body near where a group of survivors are trapped. He covers her body, then tells the guys he’s with that this looks like a trap, so he comes up with a plan. He walks out and calls for Scab (Rowland Pidlubny), who comes to face him along with the rest of the Sisterhood. Julius notices that Callie (Macie Juiles) is in the cage of humans and knows he has to do something.

Destiny | Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) re-captures Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro) then surprises Vanessa (Kelly Overton). They begin to fight, but are frozen in place by the Oracle (Jesse Stanley) who tells them why they’re really there.

They’ve both been drawn by the darkness, but only one will succeed in becoming the fourth Elder. The Oracle opens a magical entrance to a maze, unfreezing Sam and Vanessa to enter.

Sam gets to the alter in the center first, but Vanessa is right behind him. Sam wants to now what to do next and The Oracle tells him to take out his totem, so Sam pulls out his murder device he made as a child. The Oracle turns to Vanessa and it already knows she has the totems from the other Elders, but it takes Dylan’s ribbon from her as a symbol of her own totem. The Oracle tells Vanessa she has always been on this path to darkness, but Vanessa refuses and says she’s not, yet The Oracle still disagrees.

Sam wants to be made an Elder, so The Oracle tells him he already knows what to do, and suddenly Mohamad is there. He’s unconscious, but still alive. We know Sam has to kill him in order to become The Elder. Scarlett and Axel make it to the party just in time to see Sam kill Mohamad, the only bit of light that was in his life.

Vanessa knows the only way to stop Sam from becoming an Elder is to become one herself, but that would mean killing the light in her life, Scarlett. Scarlett suddenly realizes her true purpose in life is to keep her sister on the path of light, which means she has to sacrifice herself so Vanessa doesn’t have to do it. After tearful goodbyes, Scarlett runs herself through with one of her swords. Axel immediately turns on Vanessa, blaming her for this.

The Oracle laughs and tells Vanessa she already lost the light in her heart when Dylan died. Scarlett died for nothing. Axel leaves, promising to kill Vanessa the next time he sees her.

Sam becomes the fourth Elder, with long demonic horns and talons. Uh-oh.

Elder Sam attacks Vanessa and they fight their way out of the maze. While fighting Vanessa’s blood gets on her ancestor Lillian, waking her up. The season ends with Vanessa and Lillian Van Helsing facing off against Elder Sam.

Van Helsing returns to SYFY later in 2019 for its fourth season.
