In the latest episode of SYFY’s Van Helsing we see Vanessa deal with a great deal of pain and get some visitors from her past. ‘Outside World’ was written and directed by Jackie May.
Caught up | The episode kicks off with Vanessa (Kelly Overton) coming face-to-face with the Oracle (Jesse Stanley)for the first time in her adult life who delivers a cryptic message before disappearing just as Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro) finds Vanessa. She offers to turn her old friend back to human, but he runs. Vanessa follows Mo to an old rooftop and the pair fight it out. Unfortunately for Vanessa, the roof has a weak vent and she crashes through it and gets caught on a meat hook. It’s stuck in her back and she can’t get herself down from it.

Haunted | Vanessa is stuck for hours, hallucinating people from the past. She’s first visited by John (David Cubitt), who wants to know why he’s dead and tells her she’s basically just evil. Vanessa comes to and notices a chair close by, tries to swing close enough to drag it over, but instead ends up knocking it further away. Her next visitor is Julius (Aleks Paunovic), both versions of him, human and vampire. Human Julius tells her she’s good and needs to believe it, and vamp Julius tells her now that she’s killed and tasted blood she’s always going to need it. Julius tells Vanessa she didn’t do everything she could to save Dylan (Hannah Cheramy), and suddenly vamp Dylan appears and blames her mom for not feeding her blood.
After a snack on a bat that flew too close, Vanessa is visited by Susan (Hilary Jardine), the real Susan not the Elder Susan. Susan tells Vanessa she loves her and that she’s a good person, but suddenly human Sam appears behind Susan, just as he did the day he killed her. Sam is the darkness, trying to get Vanessa to go to the dark, but Susan is the light and wants her to stay strong.
Early the next morning Vanessa is visited by human Dylan. She tells her mom that she needs to shut out the darkness and save her strength for the final fight. Mohamad appears above them through the hole Vanessa made, and Dylan tells her mom that she has to turn their friend back. Dylan leaves with a final message, then Vanessa lures Mohamad down and gets him to bite her.
Changed | Mo falls to the floor, vomits up blood, then gets up, human. Mo immediately jumps into action and gets Vanessa off the hook. They head out and catch up a bit before Vanessa tells Mohamad they have to go separate ways and threatens to kick his ass if he follows her, so of course he follows her. All the while, the Oracle is watching this and grinning ominously.
