SYFY’s Van Helsing has returned! The season 3 premiere definitely did not skimp on blood and carnage. We see Sam and Mohamad’s massacre, what the Elder has done to get to Vanessa, and that badass fight scene at the end! The episode was written by showrunner Neil LaBute and directed by Jonathan Scarfe.
Dark Figure | The episode begins with a flashback to the night Vanessa (Kelly Overton) and Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) were separated. After leaving Scarlett with the Harker’s, Vanessa and her parents get in a bad car accident, leaving only Vanessa conscious. When she gets out of the car she sees a dark figure who extends its hand to her, and she takes it.
Cut to the present, and she’s being awoken by the Elder (Keith Arbuthnot). They fight, and the Elder picks different forms of people Vanessa knows trying to get her to calm down, finally settling on Susan’s (Hilary Jardine) form. And boy are we excited to have Hilary Jardine back on our screens as Susan again, even if she’s really the Elder. Susan Elder uses its powers to send Vanessa, Scarlett, and their dying mother Abby (Andee Frizzell) into a vision world where they could all meet and speak before Abby died. The sisters learn some cryptic yet valuable information that may help them, but they need to find some family book first.
When she comes back to her reality, she asks Susan Elder not to follow her for a bit as she goes off in search of something. She finds a book, presumably the family book her mother spoke of, and tries looking through it for answers, and even asked the Elder for help at one point.
Vanessa is very angry and goes exploring and finds Abigail (Colleen Winton), who is somehow still alive, and kills her.
Eventually Vanessa and Susan Elder hear a helicopter, so they hide to see what’s going on.

Playing With Food | Remember good looking Theo (Christopher Russell) from season 1? Well he’s back, leading and protecting a group of people in the forest. As he’s giving a pep-talk, he’s interrupted by Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro). Sampire is teaching newly turned Mohamad how to hunt and play with his food, but Mohamad really only wants to feed. Sam says he will learn to play with his food, as he kills and tortures the rest of the group.
Visitors | The rest of the group is safe and sound where Scarlett left them. Doc (Rukiya Bernard) is shocked by how fast Julius (Aleks Paunovic) is healing from his injuries from their previous encounter with the Day Walkers. They can all hear the sounds of a helicopter circling, no doubt the group Callie (Macie Juiles) made contact with, and they’re all worried. Part of the group thinks they should just welcome the strangers, but Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) knows better. But when the helicopter lands some individuals do go out to meet them, so Axel decides to leave to warn Scarlett, because these are the same people that took Vanessa.
Doc, Julius, and Jolene (Caroline Cave) go out to try to keep the newcomers distracted while Axel’s gone, but that doesn’t go so well. Dr. Harrison (John Reardon) has come along, and he wants to know where Scarlett is. Suddenly, Flesh (Vincent Gale) crawls out of his grave. He’s somehow alive now, after being very dead. Harrison wants answers, but no one says anything. He ends up taking everyone inside and tying up Julius. His intent was to torture him until someone gave him answers, but he discovered that Julius heals extraordinarily fast and wants to know what that’s about. Julius describes the Day Walkers and says the one with the scar (Teach Grant) is responsible. Harrison is very pleased by this information and reveals that he is responsible for creating Scarhead.
Harrison tries tying up Flesh instead to try to get answers about Scarlett, but by this time she’s arrived to the party with Axel. She immediately chops off Harrison’s head, triggering a super badass fight scene where several of our favorites get injured, but nothing life-threatening. And they take out all of Harrison’s men.
They take the helicopter to the facility Vanessa is at and meet her. She tells them they are welcome to get food and supplies, but they need to head to Denver because it’s a safe-zone. Only Axel and Scarlett stay behind with her. But before leaving, Scarlett gives Doc a few drops of Patient Zero’s blood, just in case something happens to them.
What a crazy premiere! What do you think is going to go down this season?
