The previous episode of Syfy’s vampire thriller Van Helsing left off with Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and the other survivors driving away from the hospital, leaving Mohamad (Oliver Mahoro Smith) behind. Now they continue along their journey, searching for a safe place to stay. Episode 8 is filled with suspense, deception, and…drunks? Here is OMFGTV‘s recap of episode 8 of Van Helsing, “Little Thing”.

“Pretty little thing, isn’t she?” | The episode kicks off with Sheema (Naika Toussaint) waking up in an eloquently decorated room, provided by Rebecca (Laura Mennell). Rebecca tells Sheema this nice lifestyle can be hers if she does her bidding, or she could turn it down and suffer the consequences. The consequence for turning down Rebecca’s offer is turning her into a human “vessel” to try to breed human/vampire hybrids, in which no previous attempt has been successful.

“Who gave you this mission?”| The group of survivors, led by Axel, make a quick stop to siphon gas. While stopped they hear church bells begin to toll in the distance, meaning there are people close by! The group is split on whether they should go find the church, or follow Axel’s military orders to go to the base. After a brief argument, Doc brings up that her sister worked at the base. Then she drops the bombshell that her sister is probably the reason the military got to Vanessa (Kelly Overton) to protect her. This new information sways the group to decide to go to the base. Just as they are leaving, Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) leaves a quick message spray painted on display for Mohamad (in hopes that he is following them).

“I’m gonna find you, no matter what it takes.” | Mohamad is in fact following after his friends! But just before he comes across Sam’s sign, he hears the church bells toll and goes off in search of the source. Just before going to sleep we see him pull out a picture of Vanessa and promise that he will find her.

“So what the hell happened to everybody?” | The group makes it to the base and has to go inside on foot. The place is surrounded by landmines so they will be protected from any attacking vampires for a while. They spend one night in a floor level building, but Axel feels unsafe and convinces then group to split up to look for a safer place to stay. Doc (Rukiya Bernard) and Vanessa go to Doc’s sister’s lab to look for Vanessa’s file. When they find it they discover it is empty, all it contains is a label: “File 281: The Farm.” John (David Cubitt) and Susan (Hilary Jardine) hear something whilst searching the area, when they go to investigate they discover it’s a man. His name is Gorman Jones (Chris Ippolito), and he claims the be a part of The Resistance, and that he recently got separated from his group. They decide to let Gorman stay, and Axel decides to look for a bomb shelter.

“They call this place The Farm.” | Axel finds The Farm and admits he doesn’t know much about it, except that scientists worked down there. Gorman blows the door up, letting everyone inside the underground shelter. Unfortunately his grenadeing the door leads to the entryway caving in, trapping everyone inside. Lucky for them, they picked a very well stocked shelter to get trapped in. Along with a large supply of real food, there is also beer! It’s party time in the bunker! They all get drunk and Sam begins to sing Big Rock Candy Mountain for everyone’s entertainment. They are all having a truly happy moment, so of course it can’t last long.

“Don’t call me a bitch, bitch.” | John and Susan sneak away and begin making out, but Susan quickly tries stopping it. John won’t take no for an answer so Susan begins to scream, drawing everyone’s attention. Vanessa is the first to arrive to Susan’s aid, and finds John with his hand around her throat. Vanessa pulls him off Susan and knocks him out. When they are debating what to do with John, Doc makes a shocking discovery; the marks around Susan’s neck look like the ones around Cynthia’s neck, and they all know she was strangled. Axel tells Sam to bring John’s bag so they can search it. Inside they find Cynthia’s finger, but John frantically denies he did it. He breaks out of the duct tape keeping him in place and grabs Susan, holding a broken bottle to her neck. Vanessa throws a knife at him, hitting him in the throat and killing him. Vanessa really hopes they were right, that John was the killer.

In summation, Sheema is being kept as a pet, Mohamad may be in love with Vanessa, and Vanessa may or may not have killed the right person. This was definitely a roller coaster of an episode! The group’s happy drunken time was quickly replaced by another death. What will they do with John’s body since they are trapped, put it in the quarantine area? Do you think John was the killer, or do you think he was being set up? Let us know in the comments!
