Vampire Diaries’ Kat Graham Talks Bonnie’s Ghost

Bonnie’s life made a turn for the worst when her character died last season on The Vampire Diaries. Fans of the resident witch are very relieved to know that while she is on the Other Side, her ghost won’t be leaving Mystic Falls any time soon. It must be hard for the recent high school graduate as her best friends are now preparing to head off to college and the man she loves can’t even feel her. Luckily for Jeremy, though, he and still see and hear her.

The Vampire Diaries' Kat Graham Talks Bonnie's Ghost“The season does start off with Jeremy being the one person that Bonnie can connect to,” Kat Graham told us in San Diego, “so we’ll see a lot of interaction in the beginning. We’ll see a lot of that love and that friendship. And while she can’t say where those two characters are headed romantically, she does say that it’s still “up in the air.”

Graham also spoke about the tough decision her character had to make when bringing Jeremy back from the dead. “[Bonnie] is a character who is notoriously loyal and passionate and self-sacrificing,” she says. “It’s inspring for people to see because most people aren’t that way and I think that’s what’s so intriguing about the character because most people don’t want to maybe give someone the time of day let alone die for somebody they love, but there are some people that are and those people impact the world because they’re willing to die for what they believe in.”

When finding out the news that Bonnie was going to die at season’s end and whether or not her character was going to continue being on the show, Graham was surprisingly indifferent. “I’m not somebody who is emotionally attached to the outcome of a character that I’m hired to play; the fans are,” she explains. “I’m there to do my job and go home after I do my job. It wasn’t like ‘Don’t worry.’ It doesn’t matter because I’ve done my job up to this point and I’m happy with what work I’ve done. So even if they killed me off, I would still be grateful.”

She goes on to say that she was more concerned about what her fans would think because, like her, they are extremely passionate, very aggressive and intense. “I didn’t know what to say [to the fans about Bonnie’s death] and I didn’t know how to approach them when the finale [aired]. So I kind of let the writers answer the questions and I kind of just stayed off of Twitter for a few days.”

The Vampire Diaries Season Five premieres this fall on The CW.
