Dopplegangers seem to be all the rage lately on The Vampire Diaries. Not only is Elena the doppleganger for Katherine, but it was revealed last season that Stefan Salvatore was one for Silas, as well.
We spoke with Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Caroline Dries during the San Diego Comic-Con where she shared some details about Stefan’s ringer, the challenges it brought, and the good news for Delena fans.
“We knew Stefan was going to be the doppleganger reveal since the beginning of last season,” Dries reveals. “Our challenge last season was how do we create the concept of Silas and deliver on it, but not fully deliver so we have a huge twist at the end. So that’s when we get the many faces of Silas.”
“This season is going to explore why [dopplegangers] exist,” she continues. “It’s so weird that Elena and Katherine look exactly alike and nobody has a good answer. So this season we kinda understand why they were created, what it means for the universe and what it means for this character specifically. It’s a really cool mythology.”
For the Delena fans who celebrated Elena’s proclamation of love for Damon, they can rest easy knowing that the love triangle is essentially over. “What we do want to do is deliver on the Elena and Damon romance and happiness,” Dries says. “We dont just want them to get together and break up and get together and break up. We’ve spent four seasons trying to earn this for [Damon] and so we’re not just going to rip it away.”
The Vampire Diaries Season Five premieres this fall on The CW.
