A deadly, silent killer looms in Beacon Hills, Scott is threatened by a fresh face, and a new creature brings up more questions in the latest installment of Teen Wolf. Let’s take a look at some of the stuff that went down in the episode, “Muted.”
The episode opens with a young boy who steps out of his house to look for his cat Willow. He goes back to his room and finds his cat under the bed. When he gets a light to take a better look at the cat, he sees that Willow is covered in blood. Just then he hears is entire family being slaughtered by an unknown presence. He comes out of his bedroom and sees the ax-wielding killer and the boy runs into the bathroom. The killer — via computer — instructs the terrified (and shirtless! *hotness*) boy to break the bathroom mirror and use one of its shards to defend himself. When the murderer makes his way into the bathroom, he sees that the boy has jumped out a window and fled the house.
At Beacon Hills High, the lacrosse team participate in an open try-out to fill a couple of positions and Scott (Tyler Posey) and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) notice a freshman on the field who’s grabbing the attention of everyone and Coach Finstock (Orny Adams). The new kid, Liam (Dylan Sprayberry, “Common Law“), is not only good, but he’s a little too good — suspiciously good that it raises questions for Stiles and he confronts the freshman to see if he, like Scott, has any were-abilities. “I guess I’m just that good,” he tells Stiles.
Back on the lacrosse field during tryouts, Scott tries to remind everyone why he’s the current captain of the squad and in doing so, he accidentally injures Liam, which sends him to the hospital. Also during the tryouts, frustrated Coach Finstock aimlessly throws a lacrosse ball towards Malia’s (Shelly Hennig) which is quickly caught by Kira, like a reflex. Impressed by her catch, he asks her to throw it back and she does with force, hitting right in the gut. Looks like he found a new member of the team!
At the hospital, Liam is seen by a doctor who turns out to be his step-dad (Todd Williams, “The Vampire Diaries“) and Scott overhears outside Liam’s room that he just wanted to impress them including the captain of the team. Scott regrets his decision to bring back his werewolf powers on the field. Just then Scott receives a call from Lydia saying that the sole survivor of the ax attack, Sean (Glenn McCuen), is at the hospital and that he may be in danger.
Scott runs to find Sean and he and his mother discover that Sean is a new kind of creature not seen before in Beacon Hill: A Wendigo. After a brief brawl in the hallway (where’s all the other nurses and doctors?) Sean snatches Liam and takes him up to the roof threatening to throw Liam over. Scott pleads with the wendigo to spare Sean’s life and that Scott can help him deal with whatever the hell he is. Liam goes over and hangs on the edge for dear life and as his fingers start to slip off, Scott quickly decides that the only way to save him is by his fangs. He bites the freshman to hang on to him and while Sean continues to fight at Scott’s back, the sharp-toothed wendigo gets an ax in the back from the muted murderer.
As the silent killer disappears into the darkness of the hospital, he looks up at Scott and puts a finger over his mouth (if he had a mouth) signaling him to keep quiet. What the what?!
BEST BITES AND OTHER OBSERVATIONS
• We’re loving all of the scary scenes, particularly the very beginning of the episode where Sean walks around his seemingly empty house. If the directors of Teen Wolf can also direct the new MTV Scream series, then that would be so awesome!
• We’re sad that Sean had to die. He was such a hottie. 🙁
• Did anyone else notice that the Mute didn’t have a reflection in the bathroom mirror?
• The game locker that had all those dead bodies lead us to wonder if the parents were killing people to help feed their son. Anyone seen the movie Let the Right One in/Let Me In? The father of a young girl vampire killed people so he could drain them of their blood and feed it to his daughter. We think the same is going on here.
