The supernatural secrets between Scott (Tyler Posey) and Kira (Arden Cho) are now all out in the open as she witnessed he and his pack in a battle with the mysterious demon warriors at the blacklight party. She asks to see Scott’s werewolf mug and he obliges, and she shares with him the mythology of what she is: a kitsune.
The masked warriors who have been targeting the gang are known as the oni and are searching for a certain kind of kitsune, a dark kitsune called nogitsune. The nogitsune is one who is possessed by a dark spirit, and if you get in the way of the oni while they’re trying to find it, the unstoppable demons will hurt or kill you. You don’t fight the oni, you endure it. Those attacks on Lydia (Holland Roden) and Ethan (Charlie Carver) were tests to see if they had been possessed by a dark spirit. The tested subjects who are not possessed are branded with a Japanese kanji for “self,” which looks like a backwards 5.
Meanwhile, Stiles (Dylan O’Brian) goes to the hospital because he feels like he is losing his mind. He’s experiencing hallucinations, impulsivity, he’s irritable to the point of committing homicide, and has acute onset insomnia. Melissa (Melissa Ponzio) admits him into the hospital and gives him a sedative to help him sleep, because he’s had very little of it. While he’s dozing off, she notices his list of symptoms which sparks her curiosity. She goes into the records room and pulls out another chart of a patient who suffered the same specific symptoms just before dying. The patient whose chart she was reading was none other than Stiles’ late mother, Claudia Stilinski.
Over at the McCall house, Scott, Kira, Ethan, Aiden (Max Carver) and Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) are reunited with the terrifying oni. Scott tells his gang to not make a move because the oni are just looking for the nogitsune. Will it they find it in Kira as she suspected and feared? The oni grab a hold of Scott and Kira and they drop to their knees. After a few excruciating seconds, the oni release their grip as the Scott and Kira collapse to the floor. The oni didn’t find what they were looking for and vanish into thin air.
Lastly, Stiles awakens from his much-needed rest and heads out in the halls of the hospital in search of Melissa. He walks into an empty room and comes face to face with a trio of oni. One of them reaches over for Stiles’ head and he quickly and powerfully pushes that hand away. He then punches his fist through the chest of that oni and removes what appears to be the heart of it which turns out to be a firefly and the oni dies and vanishes. The nogitsune is Stiles and he is being possessed by a dark spirit!
