The latest episode of Teen Wolf titled “Visionary,” gives us a history lesson and a look into Derek’s (Tyler Hoechlin) past and how he met and then lost his first love. It was a terribly romantic episode with a heart-breaking ending.
The flashback starts with a teen version of Derek (Ian Nelson) as he and his pals play basketball in the Beacon Hills High hallway disturbing a young girl named Page (Madison McLaughlin) who’s practicing on her cello. She asks for them to take their practice to the gym where they belong and he challenges her and says that he will if she can manage to grab the ball from his hands. As he weaves the ball back and forth, she tries and fails and heads back to the music room.
He follows after her to apologize. The young werewolf then asks for her name and promises she’ll reveal it if he can play any instrument in the room. He finds an instrument that anyone can play: the triangle! She gives him her name and thus starts the inevitable relationship they will form.
Young Derek wants to spend the rest of his life with Paige and young Peter (Michael Fjordbak) convinces him that he should turn Paige into a werewolf. Ennis (Brian Patrick Wade) offers to do the deed as a favor to Derek so that he gets brownie points with Derek’s mom Talia (Alicia Coppola).
Late one night, Paige gets a letter to meet Derek at the school and runs into Ennis who bites her all the while Derek is waiting in the locker room for the deed to be done. He has a change of heart and goes after her and sees that she’s in terrible pain. The plan didn’t work and the bite has started to kill her instead of turn her.
“What’s happening to her?” Derek asks Peter as Paige’s life slowly slips away. Paige whispers to Derek that she knew all along what he was and that she didn’t just like him, she loved him. She shrieks with pain and pleads with him for the pain to stop. He helps her by using his werewolf strength to crush her to death. “I’m sorry,” he tells her.
“Taking an innocent life takes something from you, a bit of your soul, darkening it,” present Peter (Ian Bohen) explains. That’s how young Derek’s eyes first turned blue like his.
BEST BITS
• We ABSOLUTELY LOVED the whole flashback story with Derek and Paige. The whole introduction with young Derek and Paige was so fun to watch and it was so hard to watch Paige die at the end. We would totally watch a show about these two from the time they met and up until the time Paige dies. It would be great to see all the fun stuff that could have happened in between. And did anyone else think Paige looks like a young Ginnifer Goodwin?
• Who knew that Deucalion (Gideon Emery) would be a hottie with his eyes in place?
• Was anyone else distracted by how similar the music in the episode sounded a lot like The Walking Dead theme song?
