Earpers were crowded around their television sets last Friday night, excitedly watching the Season 2 premiere of Syfy’s Wynonna Earp, and OMFGTV was fortunate enough to chat with the Showrunner Emily Andras all about it!
One of the biggest surprises in the season 2 premiere was the secret guest star, Rachel Skarsten, who played Black Badge Division Agent Eliza. In Eliza’s first appearance she wrestles Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) in her underwear, and looks damn good doing it. How did Skarsten land the role? Andras says they needed someone, “who’s like a badass and who can handle a scene opposite Mel, who is extraordinary, and who looks good fighting in her underwear.”
Emily had worked with Rachel in the past on Lost Girl, and decided to give her a call. “I basically picked up the phone and was like, ‘Hi Rach, it’s Em. Can you come to Calgary in minus 40 degree weather the week before Christmas and fight Melanie Scrofano in your underpants?'” And now that we’ve seen the episode, we all know what Rachel’s answer was! Emily was very grateful to her friend for accepting the role. “She’s such an amazing person. You can’t discount those kinds of relationships in this business, just having people have your back like that.”

There were many outstanding moments from the Wynonna Earp premiere, but what was perhaps the funniest was when Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) decides to talk in a British accent to sneak into BBD. The reason this moment is so funny is because Dominique is actually British, but spoke in a bad British accent anyway! We asked Emily about that decision and the story behind it.

“I had that idea [of Waverly doing a British accent] for a long time, and I just thought it was great!” It turns out the idea to do a bad one came from Dominique herself! “Domi was so cute though, because she’s like, ‘Do you want me to do my accent? Or do you want me to do a slightly shitty British accent?'” The scene is only made funnier by Nicole (Katherine Barrell) pointing out how bad the accent is.
Dominique has several shining moments in the premiere and that continues throughout the rest of the season, and Emily is extremely proud of how far the actress has come since last season. “She’s the actor I see the most growth in from season 1 to season 2,” Andras says. “She just is so much more confident. Her range is so huge, her skill set so massive, we just use every one of her abilities this year.” Get excited Waverly fans, because Dominique is a well of talent that the writers are incorporating into the show! “We just stretched that girl to the nth degree, but she’s just always so keen and excellent. I’m just so immensely proud of her.”

By the end of the premiere, Dolls (Shamier Anderson) is gone, Eliza is dead, and everyone but Nicole is working for BBD. What’s next?
“Episode 2 is really a return to Purgatory,” Andras previews. “1 was obviously in a different environment, 2 is really like, back to the town we know and love. But of course, everything’s changed. We’re back to the Black Badge, but now we have a new boss, we have new marching orders, and Dolls is gone. What does this new reality look like to Wynonna? Part of the struggle is Wynonna is now kind of being forced into a leadership position, but that’s not a natural fit for her. She hates authority! She doesn’t do rules, so being the one who’s supposed to enforce them to keep everyone else around her safe really doesn’t sit well with her.
“We meet some new characters, learn a little bit more about what the new order is in Purgatory after the events of last year,” she continues. “Purgatory is actually looking up! Things are actually kind of getting better there. At the same time, we know new creatures and new baddies are coming into the Ghost River Triangle. And not just demonic Revenants, but things maybe we haven’t seen before. It’s a really fun creature-of-the-week episode, with excellent Earp sister stuff!”
