If you watched the series premiere of Syfy’s new vampire thriller Van Helsing, then you know we can expect A LOT of blood this season.
OMFGTV hopped on the phone with the series’ leading lady, Kelly Overton, where we got her to look back at the premiere and reveals the secrets of the blood used on the show as well as the death that occurred in the premiere’s second hour.
“It’s like syrupy and sugary, and obviously has a lot of food dye,” Overton tells us. “So it’s obviously very sweet, but it’s not candy”.
She went on to say that along with being very sweet, the blood also had a distinct chemical taste to it as well. Overton kindly gave a quick shout-out to the show’s makeup and special effects department for doing such a great job on the show.
Shooting an emotional death can be somber for most, but in Kelly’s case, the feelings toward her death scene in episode two was quite the opposite!
“I’ve never done a death before, so it was really fun for me!” she says. They shot that scene the first day of shooting, about fifteen hours into the day.
Kelly was so committed to making her death look as real as possible that she even filled her mouth with the sticky, sweet blood.
“I’m gonna hold this in my mouth, and I’m gonna imagine internally something really bad happening that caused the death, and then I’m gonna push the blood out of my mouth,” she says about her process during the filming of that scene. Her dedication to that scene really impressed the crew on set.
“It was one of those movie magic moments.”
Catch more magic moments when Van Helsing airs Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
