At the end of episode 3 of Syfy’s new vampire show Van Helsing, Vanessa (Kelly Overton) jumps on Doc’s (Rukiya Bernard) back and bites her neck in order to turn her back into a human.
OMFGTV recently spoke with Kelly Overton about filming that scene and how much creative freedom she had while creating it.
“It was pretty funny, we had a lot of laughs,” she tells us.
Laughter played a key role in keeping things light while filming such a serious scene. Kelly knew the scene could have turned out very campy and overdone and was cautious not to fall into that category.

“I wanted to do something new. I wanted to stay sci-fi, but I wanted to just create a show that was really grounded, as much as we could be, in reality.”
Kelly also spoke about how much creative freedom the actors had while filming a scene like this.
“We really try to create an atmosphere where there is a lot of freedom for actors to be spontaneous, to make choices that were risky, and to feel a good sense of freedom in what they were doing,” she says. “So that was kind of one of those scenes that ended up surprising all of us.”
Finally, on the rest of the series’ inaugural season, Overton teases that viewers can expect pretty much more of everything.
“More amazing fight scenes. More character. More relationship. More adventure.”
Van Helsing airs Fridays at 10pm on Syfy.
