Aside from the series premiere of SYFY’s SurrealEstate, Megan Donovan hasn’t had much screen time, aside from the occasional drive-bys Luke does past her house to remind viewers that there’s a connection there. In fact, in Episode 5 of the paranormal series, Megan was nowhere to be seen. Thankfully for fans of the character, Megan was heavily featured in the latest episode, “Roman’s Six” — and we’ll get to see a lot more of the med student in the second half of the series’ freshman season.
In an exclusive interview with PopWire, Tennille Read discusses the growth of her role in the show, working with her castmates, and previews what viewers can expect for the upcoming episodes.
“It feels great, of course,” Read says of her smart and ambitious character getting more air time. “It’s great to have a character that’s established at the beginning and we get to see pieces of where that person’s coming from, but then as the season plays out, your arc gets to grow more and more, and that’s just satisfying and fulfilling to play as an actor. And then on top of that, I get to play with the other lead roles in the show, and that as well is such a treat to be able to do.”
On “Roman’s Six,” it was such a delight to see Megan in the same scene with everyone at the agency, that it made us think how awesome it would be if she joined in and became a part of their Scooby Gang. “I think so, too!” the Indo-Trinidadian actress exclaims. “She’s so skeptical about everything they’re doing, but it does have a driving force to help the audience figure out what they’re seeing, too. She’s kind of that voice of reason in the world where things are not normal.”
In the past few episodes of SurrealEstate, most of Megan’s scenes have been exclusively with Luke Roman (Tim Rozon). And with Luke’s ability to speak with the dead, this had us theorizing about a possible future twist that wasn’t there. In the latest episode, Megan is brought into Luke’s office with his whole crew, effectively debunking our theory that she had somehow died earlier in the season and had become a ghost.
Working with the entire cast, Read says it was a “really fun” experience. “They’re fantastic people off-screen, and so to be able to play with them on screen was just such an easy transition to make. I think this is the first time that I get to interact with all of them in some capacity. Their openness to play was really cool to be a part of.”
We’ll get to see some of that play in an upcoming episode with her and co-star Sarah Levy, who stars as the bright and cheerful Susan Ireland. “We have an episode coming up where we interact a lot, and it was just playtime,” Read previews. “It was so much fun to play off her and craft these crazy scenes together.”
As for the rest of the season of SurrealEstate as a whole, Tennille Read teases that fans are in for a real treat. “There are some pretty exciting cliffhangers coming up that I think are gonna leave audiences gasping for breath. They come out of the shadows and I think they pack a punch.”
SurrealEstate airs Fridays at 10pm on SYFY.
