It’s been a mere two episodes of SurrealEstate since newcomer Elena Juatco made her first appearance on the SYFY spooktacular. In just her first episode alone, “Gods & Monsters, the Canadian actress made a big impact, quickly garnering the love and attention from fans of the show.
Even before she made her debut, posts on social media from production company Blue Ice Pictures as well as several of the creatives from the show have all teased that “You will love her.” Sure enough, from what we’ve seen so far of the character “Lomax,” she’s easily become our favorite character on the show, bringing a fresh dynamic and new life into the series.
PopWire recently connected with Elena Juatco where she discussed joining the already-established SYFY series midway through its sophomore season, the outpouring of love and support from her new fans, and also previewed what’s to come in tonight’s all-new and emotional episode of SurrealEstate.
“[Series Creator] George Olson is so sweet. He sent me an email after my [first] episode aired and said the same thing,” Juatco tells us on her character being well received. “There’s a part of my brain that goes [into denial], I’m like ‘No, no, no. That’s not true; that can’t be. No, no, not me, no.’
“It was extremely intimidating joining this cast. They were so tight after the first season. Especially when you film somewhere where everyone’s away from their families filming in Newfoundland, you become your own little family. I was really nervous, but that went away before the first day was over.
“I just felt like I fit in and that I knew everybody; they were so warm and welcoming. I had so much fun on set. I felt very free with Lomax and the fact that now everyone is excited about her. I don’t want to jinx it. I love her so much as well. That means a lot.”
Elena’s Lomax fits in just perfectly with the cast and characters at The Roman Agency, and on the next episode of SurrealEstate, a big one for her character, she shares how her character fits into the story of the agency’s clients of the week.
“This was a very special episode for Lomax,” she says. “You finally get to see a little bit more of her empathetic side, her softer side that you only would get to see in private, in the private conversations she has with people. She is a very great listener and empathetic and has seen so much in her life with grief and with loss and with pain. She knows a lot about it and can relate to other people on that level.
“It was a very beautiful thing to play opposite Varun Saranga and Sugenja Sri who are so talented,” she continues. “I didn’t have to do anything; I just sat and I just listened because they made my job so much easier. Because of how the show is structured, that we have a different story every episode, we have these amazing actors that come in and really do give everything just for that one episode, and it’s kind of locked in that special moment.
“It’s a shame that they only came for that one episode,” Elena Juatco says. “They did such beautiful work. Very proud of it.”
SurrealEstate “Dearly Departed” was written by Gillian Müller and directed by Melanie Scrofano. The episode airs tonight, November 29 at 10pm on SYFY.
