“Supergirl” Recap: Injustice (Not the Video Game)

Recap of episode “Blind Spots”

Supergirl‘s Azie Tesfai writes this week’s surprisingly strong, profound and all-around moving episode, “Blind Spots,” which ends up being a highlight of the series. Kelly must deal with the aftermath of the building collapse, while her cries for help fall on deaf ears.

Overwhelmed | Flashing back to the explosion at the building brought down by Nyxly (Peta Sergeant), Kelly (Azie Tesfai) is horrified to see it come down, even more so when Joey is hurt in the collapse. She and Orlando rush Joey to the hospital, but the place is overwhelmed, and can’t even spare a respirator for him.

The congresswoman who voted against the housing bill is also rushed to the hospital and demands that she be given experimental drugs to treat herself or she won’t support the hospital’s health care. Kelly calls James and breaks down 0ver her powerlessness in the matter, just as Congresswoman Rankin takes the treatment which somehow causes the injured people in the hospital to pass out.

A Surprise Visit | Kelly gets a visit from John Diggle (David Ramsey), who was called in by James to help her. They go to the rubble of the building, just as Brainy (Jesse Rath) tracks Nyxly’s energy to the same location. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and company arrive to meet Kelly and John and Brainy realizes that the explosion infected everyone nearby with Nyxly’s energy, just as Rankin finds out that she can materialize anything she wants, but unbeknownst to her, this drains energy from the sick kids in the hospital.

Kelly gets a device that can track Nyxly’s energy and traces it to Rankin, who orders her bodyguard to beat up Orlando when he yells at her to do more to help Joey. Kelly dons the Guardian helmet and shield and fights Rankin, but she teleports away as Kelly gets a lock of her hair.

Where Were You? | Kelly is rightly pissed off at team Supergirl for ignoring the issue and emotionally unloads on them for not sticking up for people that look like her. She has a heart-to-heart with Supergirl about how her experience is different from Kelly’s and that Supergirl needs to change going forward.

Brainy uses the hair sample to devise a way to reverse Rankin’s energy, but doing so will mean they can’t track down Nyxly. Supergirl tells Brainy to go through with it anyway and Brainy even finds time to design a new gold Guardian suit for Kelly, which she dons to fight Rankin with team Supergirl.

Supergirl manages to knock out Rankin long enough for Kelly to drain the energy from her and use it to heal the affected in the hospital while Rankin gets arrested. Despite her victory, Kelly is still shaken by everything she went through and breaks down to Alex (Chyler Leigh), who hugs her.

Supergirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
