“Supergirl” Recap: Let’s Save the World Again

It’s the premiere of the final season of Supergirl and “Rebirth” has a lot to live up to after such a long hiatus. Can the Girl of Steel stop Lex Luthor? Can Nia save Brainy from certain doom? What surprises does the final season have in store? Enough chat, let’s find out!

Lots to Do | Picking up after last season’s cliffhanger, Brainy (Jesse Rath) is drying from radiation poisoning in Leviathan’s lair when Dreamer (Nicole Maines) tracks him down and with the help of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), M’Gann (Sharon Leal), J’onn (David Harewood) and Alex (Chyler Leigh), they manage to rescue Brainy and thanks to Alex’s badass Martian materializing gadget, she whips up the drugs necessary to save Brainy’s life.

Meanwhile, Lex (Jon Cryer), with Lillian’s (Brenda Strong) help, infuses himself with Leviathan’s energy, giving him immortal powers and to make matter substantially worse, he used Obsidian’s VR lenses to brainwash all users i.e. half the planet into worshipping him and he has satellites that will send a signal to kill everyone else. Thanks to Dreamer’s powers and Lena’s (Katie McGrath) genius, team Supergirl figures out the plan and Lena has a way to undo the signal, but that still leaves the satellites, so Supergirl contacts Lex and offers herself to him at the Fortress of Solitude on the condition that he shuts down the satellites.

Divide and Conquer | The plan is threefold: Kelly (Azie Tesfai) will download the source code for the Obsidian VR lenses from CatCo so Lena can reverse it and use Myriad to transmit the signal, while J’onn and M’Gann join psychically to try to shut down the satellites. Unfortunately, when Lex finally meets Supergirl, he immediately shoots her with a Kryptonite laser and refuses to give her the kill codes for the satellites.

They activate the kill signal, but J’onn and M’Gann shut them down psychically and Brainy and Lena use Myriad to undo the corrupted VR users. While this is going on, Alex and Dreamer break into Lex’s hideout to steal a tube full of alien material from Leviathan’s planet that could hurt Lex and they get it after a fight with Lillian and Otis Graves (Robert Baker). Lex finishes off Supergirl, but when he walks away, the Fortress sends a drone to infuse Supergirl with sunlight.

We Are the Champions | After Lex celebrates dancing to Queen’s “We Are the Champions,” J’onn, M’gann, Dreamer, Alex and an armor wearing Supergirl arrive to kick his ass, but he uses his powers and wipes the floor with them. Supergirl throws Alex the tech that make Lex mortal and she shoots Lex with it, just as he fires a Phantom Zone projector at her. Supergirl takes the blast and is banished to the Phantom Zone, much to everyone’s horror. The good news is that Lex gets sent to prison, and William Day (Staz Nair) publishes an expose with Eve Tessmacher (Andrea Brooks) as a source.

And Andrea Rojas (Julie Gonzalo) pledges to turn CatCo back on track- after breaking into her father’s study and using his computer to buy all the shares of the now bankrupt Obsidian so she doesn’t take the hit! Kind of defeats the purpose of turning the corner, don’t you think? After Nia and Brainy make peace, Lena uses Myriad to wipe Lex’s mind of Supergirl’s secret identity so he won’t blab, and Alex realizes that she has to tell Kelly that Kara is Supergirl, since she’s the last one who doesn’t know. The crew pledges to get Kara back and J’onn dubs Alex the Sentinel based off a guardian from Mars. In the Phantom Zone, Supergirl is surrounded by very scary looking dudes…
