“Supergirl” Season Finale Recap: Up In the Air

Thanks to COVID-19, “Supergirl’s” fifth season ends early, and let’s just say you can tell this wasn’t the ending they anticipated. In “Immortal Kombat,” Lex and Leviathan align to kill Supergirl and wipe out billions for good measure, forcing Brainy to make the final call. Kara must decide if she can trust Lena to stop Lex’s plot.

The Three Supergirls | Lena fills Kara and company in on Lex’s plot to kill the billions of Obsidian VR users during the virtual Unity Festival, while Lex orders Rama Khan to kill Supergirl and her friends using Kryptonite. Since Leviathan can track Supergirl every time she uses her powers- for some reason- J’onn and M’gann shapeshift into copies of Supergirl, causing Nia to squeal, “It’s just like the Deathly Hallows!” While the copies distract Leviathan, Lena takes Kara to Lex Corp to build a Kryptonite  -proof suit, but during this, Kelly calls Alex and informs her that William went missing tracking Eve, which Kara hears.

The Final Mission | After learning of Lex’s Death-to-Supergirl plot, Brainy contacts his female counterpart and informs her of his plan: to shrink the members of Leviathan into a bottle, storing them in another dimension. Unfortunately, Leviathan’s base emits radiation to anyone not in their system, meaning this is a suicide mission.

Meanwhile, Kara and Lena have a blowout after Lena tries to make amends, with Kara saying that she doesn’t forgive Lena’s many mistakes over the season, before Kelly and Alex find William and Eve in a warehouse. Eve shoots William, but Supergirl saves him and apprehends Eve, who ends up spilling the beans on Leviathan’s plans to the team.

I Believe In You | As billions log into Obsidian’s VR, Cooper orders Rojas to find and kill Supergirl, to which Rojas reluctantly agrees. Supergirl logs into the VR world and gives the population a rousing speech about how escaping from reality won’t make the pain of loss go away, while Rojas arrives to kill Supergirl, but Lena convinces her not to by stepping in front of Supergirl. The users all log out, saving the world, and Supergirl even rescues Eve’s mother for good measure.

Meanwhile, Brainy breaks into Leviathan’s base and uploads the code to shrink all of Leviathan’s members into the bottle, being hit with lethal radiation as a result. He succeeds, sending Rama Khan and his cronies into the bottle, but Lex arrives and takes the bottle from the dying Brainy who is powerless to stop it. Dreamer finally sees what’s happening with Brainy in her vision, while Kara and Lena finally make peace and vow to take down Lex together. Speaking of, Lex delivers the bottle to none other than Lillian Luthor, as Cooper, who was knocked out by a power surge, wakes up looking like a Transformer.
