“Supergirl” Recap: For the Winn

Thanks to “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “Supergirl” fans get the long awaited return of Jeremy Jordan as Winn… and Toyman??? “Back from the Future- Part One” delivers a double duty episode as Winn returns from the future to stop an alternate version of himself from carrying out his murderous father’s wishes. Kara teams up with William, while Nia struggles to work with Brainy after their breakup.

Toyman Redux | Now that Brainy is working for Lex, his first assignment is to break a guy who looks like Winn out of a prison bus. This Winn is the Toyman serial killer of another “Crisis” Earth- I know, I know- and Lex sets him loose, but grabs a sample of his DNA. The Toyman sets bombs at a toy convention and tries to assassinate a toymaker, but a Legion of Superheroes ship arrives and stops the bullet. Out comes, wait for it… Winn! He’s now not only a full blown Legion member, but is married with a daughter to boot. Unfortunately, the Toyman’s antics have framed him in the future for murder, so he travels back in time to stop the Toyman.

1,000,000 Followers | Meanwhile, Lex convinces Lena to make amends with Andrea, but in the reset timeline, Andrea was never working for Leviathan, making her useless. After catching Winn up on the “Crisis,” the gang assembles at J’onn’s awesome new Tower, made as a headquarters for all heroes of the new Earth, Batwoman, Flash and Black Lightning included, and see Toyman releasing a manifesto video that if it gets a million likes, will set off his latest attack. In comes Nia to dream the Toyman’s location, but all she sees is Brainy transforming into a tiger, clearly still affected by their breakup. On the plus side, Winn not only gets to finally meet Nia, but gives her a mega pep talk and says that her descendant will help make his Legion ring with her dreaming powers.

Strength in Numbers | Winn eventually figures out where Toyman is and finds a clue that he will attack Andrea’s speech at National City University, home of the tigers. Sure enough, Toyman sets loose robot tigers to attack the crowd as team Supergirl fights them off in a scene that would be really cool if “Eye of the Tiger” wasn’t playing. No, seriously. They play the most overused song on Earth during a cool fight scene. Anyway, Toyman blows himself up with a bomb, but Supergirl saves everyone from getting killed. This saves Winn’s future, but he then discovers that it was Brainy who set Toyman free. He’s incredibly pissed- until he isn’t, for some reason and forgives him. Ok…

Elsewhere, Kara agrees to help out William with investigating Lex, who has used Toyman’s DNA to get inside the Legion ship and steal a cube with the future’s database on it. He presents the cube to Lena with all the information she needs to resume her mind control project.

“Supergirl” returns with new episodes Sunday, February 16 on The CW.
