“Supergirl” Recap: Wait, What?

Hope you enjoyed The CW’s five show crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and didn’t skip it because you only watch one of the five shows and wouldn’t be able to follow it. What’s that? You didn’t watch the crossover? Tough! “Supergirl” is now intrinsically tied to the events of that event in its latest episode, “The Bottle Episode,” leaving casual fans going, “Huh?” As someone who isn’t well versed in the Arrowverse, I’ll be trying to play catch up here, so bear with me.

Kara is now in an alternate universe in which Lex Luthor is the head of the DEO and has a plot to align with Lena to take down Leviathan. Multiple Brainiacs from other realities arrive, forcing Brainy to make a heartbreaking decision.

He’s Baaack! | Okay, so after “Crisis,” Lex Luthor is back and is now the head of the DEO and everyone sees him as the world’s ultimate hero. Only a select few know about the show so far, namely Kara, Alex, J’onn, Nia and Brainy, but everything else has been rewritten a-la the fourth season of “Fringe.” But to make things interesting, Lex has made sure that Lena remembered everything so that she’s still pissed at Kara and wants to “fix the world,” or whatever. Lex offers to help her do that, even using the lie detector alien to convince her that he’s not playing her, but after Lena agrees to help him go after Leviathan, Lex seems to be in cahoots with Lillian, who also remembers everything.

Seeing Quadruple | To make matters even more complicated, multiple versions of Brainiac-5 arrive, one of which is not only a woman, but is played by Jesse Rath’s sister Meghan Rath, and some begin to vanish. Due to the (sigh) collapse of the multiverse, Brainiacs from other realities are here and are being killed by something unknown. Also, the witches that brought Reign to life in season 3 are back from another Earth and here in National City. Because!

Going Home Again | As Andrea Rojas gets a visit from Jemma Cooper, who happens to be one of Leviathan’s bigwigs, Nia catches one of the Brainiacs with a bottle that is holding a miniaturized Earth. He reveals that he’s been killing the other Brainiacs and wants to release his shrunken world that he saved, but that will destroy this Earth. He escapes and our Brainy confesses to Kara that the three dots on his forehead are inhibitors that prevent him from accessing his entire emotional spectrum in fear of ending up like his evil predecessors. As Supergirl, Dreamer and Brainy catch the evil Brainiac-5 using the witches to unseal the bottled Earth, a fight breaks out, set to N’Sync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” Because!

Dreamer tells Brainy to take off his inhibitors and he turns his natural color of green and convinces Brainiac-5 to wait for a safe way to unseal his Earth. He also somehow shrinks him and the witches and puts them inside the bottle so they can be on their home planet. Female Brainiac tells Brainy that he must work with Lex to stop Leviathan, but he must do so secretly and without anyone’s help. To that end, Brainy regretfully breaks up with Nia to keep her safe from his plan. He then offers to help Lex, who reveals that a doppelgänger from another Earth has been arrested- and it looks just like Winn. Hope you’re confused!
