This time last year, “Supergirl” gave us a terrible villain origin flashback episode that was one of the most out of place and outright awful episodes of the show’s run. It seems history is repeating itself here, as “Confidence Woman” goes into Andrea Rojas’s origin story, which is just as out of place and time wasting as Ben Lockwood’s story.
The Family Business | The episode begins with the shadowy figure that’s been murdering suspects unsuccessfully attempting to kill Russell in the DEO, before revealing that the shadow is, surprise, surprise, Andrea. She asks Lena for her help to break into the DEO to help Russell escape, but Lena refuses, triggering an episode-long flashback to young Lena and Andrea meeting at boarding school- Andrea literally walks up to Lena and they become friends! Great writing!- as Lena tells a story of her birth mother telling her the tale of the Acrata Medallion, a mythical magical artifact. A few years later, Andrea’s father becomes suicidal after a rival company outdoes Obsidian North and Lex fires Lena for objecting to his plans to kill Superman.

Lucky Medallion | Out of the blue- again, great writing- Lena and Andrea get together again and on the biggest whim in the world, decide to go on an “Indiana Jones” essie hike to find the medallion. This is so stupid a plot line, that even Andrea points out how crazy it is. The real point is that once Andrea finds the chamber where the medallion is, a mysterious man appears from nowhere and orders her to take the medallion and tell no one she has it, or else her luck will change for the worse. When Lena arrives, Andrea says she didn’t find the medallion.
Soon after, Obsidian North’s stock skyrockets after the rival company goes bankrupt. Lena travels to London with Rahul Kohli’s Jack from way back when- At least this show is consistent when it comes to its timeline- where Lena sees Andrea wearing the medallion. The two drift apart, but Andrea ends up meeting Russell and falling for him, but one day, the Leviathan woman arrives and orders Andrea to use the medallion’s powers to kill a man, on the promise that if she doesn’t, her father will commit suicide.
Betrayed Again | When Russell finds the medallion in Andrea’s purse, Leviathan men appear from nowhere and try to kill him, but Andrea convinces them to spare him and make him work for them. Back in present day, Andrea proves to Lena that the medallion has powers and Lena agrees to help her break into the DEO by using the mind control device on the DEO’s agents. Andrea breaks out Russell and gets away, but Lena demands that Andrea give her the medallion. Um, why? Why is that Lena’s priority? Andrea hands it over, but as she and Russell are leaving, Russell is shot by Leviathan, who tells Andrea that the medallion only amplified the darkness inside her. Speaking of, Lena translates the inscriptions on the medallion and it says “Leviathan.”
