“Supergirl” Recap: Doing the Right Thing

After a long hiatus and the game changing reveal of Lex Luthor’s master plan, “Supergirl” takes things down a notch with the disappointing “Crime and Punishment,” an episode that barely does anything to advance the storyline or add anything unique to the proceedings.

Supergirl is declared a fugitive and Lena teams up with her to clear her name. Brainy consults Nia on a tough decision, while Alex tries to get through to Haley.

The Fugitive | One of the rare bright spots of this episode is seeing the impact of Supergirl’s framing on the public, as when Supergirl tries to save the victim of a car accident, people try to kill her- again, how does one ordinary person kill Supergirl? Plus, the guy she saves tells her that his daughter was devastated seeing her idol kill people. How the season will set public opinion back in Supergirl’s favor will be a tough one.

Supergirl and Lena travel to the prison where Lex was staying to look for clues, while the DEO gets a visit from Lockwood, who demands that they summon Supergirl with the alert watch so he can kill her with anti alien weapons. Haley asks Alex to hand over the watch so they can follow the order, but Alex covertly tells her to set off the “it’s a trap” signal. Lockwood also demands that the DEO hand over the national alien registry so they can hunt down aliens.

Subterfuge | Brainy plots to delete the registry to keep the aliens safe, but has a crisis when the odds are literally 50/50 that it will either help the alien population or hurt them.

He consults Nia to dream the future to see what will happen, but she tells him to trust his gut. Brainy ends up doing the most obvious thing in the world, deleting the list, but downloading a copy, even after Nia dreams of Agent Liberty attacking Brainy.

At the prison, Supergirl runs into Lex’s cellmate, Steve, a reporter who was arrested after leaking government files, who tells Supergirl that she’s actually doing more harm than good by saving people. At that moment, Otis arrives and frees the prisoners asking them to kill Supergirl- seriously, HOW CAN YOU KILL SUPERGIRL???

Off the Record | Alex tries to talk Haley into disobeying Lockwood’s orders, but Haley sticks to her unlikeable guns and even reveals that she knows how to use the watch to summon Supergirl. While this is going on, James is doing therapy to get through his PTSD, but when he has another panic attack, he crushes a lamp with his bare hands and asks Kelly to talk to Lena about the cure she gave him.

Lena finds a very convenient hidden door in Lex’s cell that leads to a secret lab, but before they can get any information from the it, Otis arrives in Lex’s cell and Lex himself calls Otis to detonate a bomb inside him that destroys the lab, but Supergirl and Lena escape. Fortunately, Kara talks to Steve as a reporter- he happens to be a fan of CatCo- and he gives her a flash drive of Lex’s files from the lab that he backed up. This is honestly the worst prison ever to allow all of this to happen. Even worse, Eve somehow “rebuilds” Otis after he explodes for some reason. The one bright spot is that when Lockwood demands for Haley to summon Supergirl, Haley sends the trap signal instead. She’s still a nasty character, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

“Supergirl” airs Sundays on The CW.
