“Supergirl” follows up last week’s emotional ending with an equally emotional and action packed episode that intertwines two stories together beautifully in one of the show’s best episodes bar none. In “Blood Memory,” Kara struggles with keeping secrets from Alex, who is tracking people jacked up on alien spiked drugs. Kara accompanies Nia to her hometown, where she meets Nia’s family.
Breaking Bad, Dude! | Hey, remember Russian Supergirl? Turns out the writers finally did! As Russian Supergirl is training in Russia, she inexplicably gets a bloody nose and passes out. As Russian soldiers try to revive her, the defibrillator somehow sends electrical energy from her body ACROSS THE FREAKIN PLANET to the VERY SPECIFIC location of an RV operated by Jerry and Kev, two drug dealers whose pills get spiked with alien energy and the guys who take them turn into rage filled monsters. As improbable as this storyline is, this is honestly the only gripe with this phenomenal episode.
A Two Donut Kind of Day | After Alex’s memory of Supergirl’s true identity has been wiped, Kara at first is taking it surprisingly well at game night, until Alex forgets what Kara’s favorite movie is- “The Wizard of Oz” for the record. PS. Alex’s fav flick is “Terminator 2,” because of course it is. As Alex and Brainy investigate the alien drugs, Kara tags along with Nia to her hometown of Parthas, a haven for aliens on Earth, where most of the inhabitants are accepting of aliens.

Nia also fills Kara in on her family fully supporting her transition and how her mother, Isabelle, uses her dreaming powers to help others. The twist is that Nia’s sister, Mave, has been convinced that she will be the woman in her generation to receive the dreaming powers, as only one woman per generation can get powers. This also means that Nia unintentionally gained her dreaming powers after transitioning to a woman, meaning transitioning literally gave her power! I see what you did there…
An Oasis of Tolerance | Nia asks her mother if she can give her powers to Mave, which Isabelle says is impossible, before she is bitten by a poisonous spider and dies. As the town gathers for a memorial, Kev and Jerry get robbed by Children of Liberty, who steal the alien drugs to go rough up the aliens at the memorial. Right before they attack, Nia dreams of the attack and yanks Mave out of danger, exposing that she was the one who has powers, infuriating Mave.
Alex and the DEO arrive to contain the situation, but she tries to shoot an innocent alien who fights back against the attackers. When Supergirl intervenes, Alex is furious at her, yelling that the Girl of Steel can’t understand what it’s like to feel vulnerable, leaving Kara devastated. Keeping on that theme, Mave is angry that Nia got the powers and tells Nia that it’s not fair because she’s not a real woman. OUCH!
On the drive home, Kara comforts the devastated Nia by revealing to her that she’s Supergirl. She encourages Nia to embrace who she is and her powers, which works out great, because Nia’s father gave her a cool super suit before the memorial. Back at Kara’s place, Kara and J’onn figure out that erasing Alex’s early memories of growing up with an alien also erased her connection to aliens in general, but there’s nothing they can do about and they still must lie to Alex. Back in Russia, a soldier calls someone in America about waking up Russian Supergirl. Lex Luthor, maybe…?
“Supergirl” returns with new episodes Sunday, February 17 on The CW.
