“Supergirl” Recap: Kill Your Idols

“Supergirl” gets its groove back in an episode that has action, drama, great moral debates and a few surprises. “Parasite Lost” saw Jansen absorb the powers of Parasite and go after Supergirl, while an alien healer comes under attack. Alex meets her new boss, while James comes face to face with Lockwood.

Crossing the Divide | After a fun little rooftop brunch with Kara and company- Brainy even gets drunk!- the now Parasite infected Jansen attacks a shapeshifting alien in town square and briefly absorbs Supergirl’s powers. After escaping, Jansen realizes that he can only absorb alien powers for a short while before burning out.

This is perfectly timed with Kara and Nia teaming up to write an article on Amade, an alien with healing powers who can only heal other aliens, although he wants to someday heal human hearts. Despite a glowing article from Kara, readers start flaming him in the comments and Amade himself is later found with the amulet that gives him his powers ripped out of his chest, leaving him at death’s door.

Dig a Little Deeper | As Alex begins to get along great with General Haley, who praises her work at the DEO, J’onn reads Amade’s mind and sees an image of a woman, who J’onn and Kara track down and find out is actually Elizabeth Hawkins, Amade’s secret daughter. Ms. Hawkins tells Kara and J’onn that Amade walked out on them and never answered Elizabeth’s many letters to him, which devastates Kara after her praising of him.

Speaking of things going on beneath the surface, Lena takes James to a media conference, that, for some reason, Lockwood is attending. Lockwood tells James that his work as Guardian is inspiring anti alien activists, which James makes perfectly clear is not his intent. Lockwood fires back, saying that James ignoring the issues the anti alien people bring up won’t make the problem go away, which is another valid point. Clearly, the writers are thinking about every angle of this issue and honestly, at this point it seems like there’s no good solution.

Seen, Not Heard | After Kara finds pictures of Amade with Elizabeth’s mother, she confesses to having lied to them and hidden the letters that Amade wrote back to Elizabeth. She was also instrumental in stealing the amulet from him and giving it to Jansen. Jansen then attacks a vigil for Amade and with the amulet, is now nearly unstoppable.

As Supergirl tries to evacuate citizens, Haley gives Alex an order to kill Jansen, knowing full well that doing so could result in an explosion that would kill innocent civilians. Alex defies the order and talks Jansen down and he removes the amulet and seemingly dies in the process. The amulet is delivered back to Amade and he tearfully reunites with Elizabeth.

Back at the DEO, Haley shows her true colors by badmouthing J’onn in front of Alex and ordering her to salute her after that. Kara tells Nia that she’ll be writing profiles on ordinary aliens living in National City, while J’onn gets a call asking him to solve an alien hate crime. James tells Lena that Lockwood was right in saying that turning away from the bigots won’t change their minds and calls up Lockwood, trying to use his Guardian persona to influence him.
