“Supergirl” Season Premiere Recap: A Superhero’s Work Is Never Done

After rocky third season, The CW’s “Supergirl” blasts back into action for season four’s premiere, “American Alien,” which is crammed full of new stuff for fans, and fortunately, all of them worked for the most entertaining season opener since season two.

As Supergirl works to bring down an anti-alien movement, Lena’s relationship with her mother takes a surprising turn. Kara mentors a new CatCo reporter, Nia Nal, while J’onn refuses to take part in the fight.

Falling Into Place | With Superman off Earth for some reason, Supergirl is pulling his shift, saving the day all around the world, including stopping a train in Kaznia from going off the rails, “Spider-Man 2” style. Kara’s CatCo career is going great too, as she steps in to mentor Nia Nal (Nicole Maines), who pretty much steals the episode in her first scene alone. Get ready to fall in love with her.

James, however, is facing an indictment due to his role as Guardian and Lena is offering to help, but James insists that he can handle his own problems. J’onn is helping Fiona (“The Internship’s” Tiya Sircar) with an alien support group of sorts, including an alien researcher who gets attacked and mutilated by Mercy Graves (Rhona Mitra) and her brother Otis.

Lighting the Fuse | Supergirl goes to visit Lillian Luthor in prison to get information on Lex’s former partner. In a surprising twist, it seems that Lillian has turned over a new leaf and is happy to set things right. When Supergirl goes to a Cadmus safe house given to her by Lillian, she finds a chat network of millions of ordinary citizens buying weapons to kill local aliens, as well as plans to attack President Marsdin’s alien summit at Camp David.

Supergirl and Alex assemble the DEO to protect the summit when Mercy and Otis attack. Otis tries to shoot Marsdin, but she lives and Supergirl chases after the Graveses while they are on motorbikes in pretty awesome sequence. Mercy shoots her own brother and Supergirl saves him, allowing Mercy to escape, but Otis was wearing a bulletproof vest. Fortunately, Otis still gets arrested, although he is unlikely to talk.

Make Some Waves | Kara encourages Nia to pitch a story on National City’s fashion scene, but Nia chickens out in the newsroom. When Kara asks why she didn’t speak up and Nia says she was “afraid to make waves,” Kara tells her that she should face her fears regardless.

Lena visits her mom in prison and gets information on Lex’s former business partner who was laundering money, information that she bribes the DA with to get James’ indictment dropped on the condition he never suits up as Guardian again. But just when it seems all is well, conveniently angled news footage from Marsdin’s shooting reveals that she is an alien. Also, Fiona is kidnapped and executed by the mysterious Agent Liberty.
