“Supergirl” Episode Review: Sins of the Father

In “Supergirl’s” drama heavy episode “Far From the Tree,” J’onn and Kara travel to Mars to help M’gann locate a missing relic with ties to J’onn’s father. Maggie must face her past when her father arrives to her bridal shower.

Two not often-spotlighted characters got serious drama this week, and it actually paid off. On the J’onn front, he returned to Mars and met his father, being held captive by White Martians because he knows the location of a staff that could liberate the Martians.

In an interesting twist, J’onn’s father was convinced that J’onn was just a White Martian in disguise and refused to help him. This led to an emotional scene where J’onn showed his father a memory of their lost family, convincing him of the truth.

Also, Kara got one of the best jokes in “Supergirl” history by rolling up to the White Martians’ ritual in an old car with Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time” playing on the radio.

Back on Earth, Maggie invited her father to her bridal shower, and at first, her dad was a standup guy. But of course, he ran out of the party after seeing Alex and Maggie kiss and had an angry, if understandable, blowout with Maggie about living in shame. To Maggie’s credit, she realized that the love of her friends was all she needed and told her father as such.

“Far From the Tree” took two characters we love and threw them through an emotional ringer. Unlike last season’s episode “Star-Crossed,” however, each story worked in harmony and had real impact. It was a perfect example of how to do drama on a comic book show right.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW.
