“Supergirl” Season 3 Premiere Review: Wake Up Call

“Supergirl” is back in business in the season 3 premiere, “Girl of Steel.” After the loss of Mon-El, Kara shuts out her civilian life, putting her relationships with her friends at risk. Lena faces a new adversary in Morgan Edge, a business tycoon who wants to censor CatCo’s coverage.

Kara goes to a dark place after losing Mon-El, dedicating herself to Supergirl 100% and even quitting CatCo after a blowout with James. This led to a heart wrenching argument between Kara and Alex, as Alex tries to convince Kara to snap out of it and Kara is at her absolute lowest point. Fortunately, nearly drowning while trying to stop a bomber makes Kara see the light, as it were, and she ends the episode joining her friends for a drink.

Elsewhere, Lena deals with Morgan Edge, played by a mustache-less Adrian Pasdar, who is not only a sexist pig, but wants CatCo under his control to censor the press. Sound familiar? The good news is Lena beats him to the punch to buy CatCo and Supergirl drops him on a barge after finding out his role in the bombing.

And Alex tearfully asks J’onn to walk her down the aisle at her wedding, leading to a funny line: “If we cry, everyone will know that we can cry” We also briefly met Samantha (Odette Annable) who showed off some strength while trying to save her daughter.

“Girl of Steel” was a emotional opener to this more serious season, and it ended up delivering a strong hour. It also asks some interesting questions about humanity that hopefully the season will address in a clever fashion.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW.
