On “Supergirl’s” season finale, “Nevertheless, She Persisted,” Supergirl must face off against Rhea in a battle that will determine the fate of National City, while an impossible sacrifice must be made.

Man, Kara’s love life is just doomed, isn’t it? Mon-El was forced to leave Earth after Lillian Luthor used a device to irradiate the planet’s atmosphere with lead, poisoning all Daxamites. This lead to a tearful goodbye between Kara and Mon-El that was beautifully written and acted by both parties. It also put Kara at an all-time low, seeing as everyone else is happy and healthy- BTW Alex and Maggie are getting married!- and reversed Kara’s happiness from the beginning of the season/end of last season.
There was also a ton of action in this finale, from the opening battle between Superman and Supergirl to the finals showdown between Rhea and the Girl of Steel. And if there’s one thing this show is good at, it’s stacking the odds against the hero. There was a real sense of hopelessness during this whole episode, making all the more satisfying when there was a victory, even with a cost.
“Nevertheless, She Persisted” was a strong and powerful conclusion to the outstanding second season of “Supergirl.” With action, drama and a strong story through it all, this was a great sendoff for this season.
“Supergirl” returns this fall on The CW.
