With three episodes to go in season 2, “Supergirl” takes a thriller-esque detour with “Alex.” A mysterious terrorist kidnaps Alex, forcing Kara and Maggie to decide how far they’re willing to go to save her.

Somehow, this episode, which did very little for the plot train, had everything in it. Alex gets kidnapped by Rick Malverne, a childhood friend who figured out Supergirl’s identity and is using the sisters’ connection to free his imprisoned father, played by “Slither’s” Gregg Henry. While it was cool that a villain figured out Supergirl’s secret just by “putting two and two together” as Rick put it, the idea felt wasted on a villain of the week. Plus, Gregg Henry didn’t get that much to do aside from the ending, and it would’ve been nice to play up the father/son connection a bit more for it to stick better.
The good news was that Maggie got her strongest stuff yet as she realized that she does truly love Alex, in a heartbreaking scene of her keeping Alex calm over the phone- Side note: Floriana Lima kills it here. She also dealt with her issues with Supergirl’s undermining of good old fashioned detective work, which paid off when the girls’ roles reversed in the ending, as Supergirl had to talk down the bad guy and Maggie was prepared to go a different route.
“Alex” had drama, character, action and romance all in one focused hour. But with “Supergirl” approaching the final three episodes of the season, it’s time for all hands on deck for a killer ending.
