“Supergirl” Episode Review: Deception and Lies

There was relationship drama abound in this week’s “Supergirl” as Mon-El’s parents arrived to Earth to reclaim their son, as Kara realizes that Mon-El is not who he says he is. Winn’s wild night with Lyra ends badly, forcing him to deal with a painful truth.

“Star-Crossed” lived up to its title as Kara found out that Mon-El- GASP!- is really Daxam’s prince. Okay, so the real problem was that he lied to her and honestly, it’s been so long since we’ve heard how awful Daxam was that this felt a little contrived. It only served to break up the pair at the episode’s end to make Kara even more miserable than she already was. Although, she did take getting fired pretty well with a “Game of Thrones” marathon, so…

But it was Winn who got the most to work with this week, as Lyra- GASP!- was using him to steal priceless paintings. Of course, she was doing so to save her kidnapped brother, but this was where the episode really shined. Not only did Winn have to deal with being betrayed, but seeing Lyra and Winn appear to be the perfect sexually active cross-species pairing and then drop this bomb actually had a substantial emotional impact. Unlike Kara and Mon-El, however, this subplot had a happy ending.

“Star-Crossed” dueled up the romantic drama and ironically, the side story outweighed the main story. With so much of the episode devoted to Winn/Lyra’s troubles, it took the focus off the titular character too much.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays on The CW.
