“Supergirl” Episode Review: The Game of Love

On a belated Valentine’s Day episode of “Supergirl,” Kara was courted by Mxyzptlk, a fifth-dimensional creature who can alter reality and was determined to win Kara’s heart. Alex tries to surprise Maggie for Valentine’s Day and Winn contemplates a relationship with an alien woman.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk” put a rightfully joyous and upbeat take on a Valentine’s Day episode for this lighthearted superhero show. Mxyzptlk was an unusual villain for “Supergirl” in every sense of the word. For one thing, he didn’t see himself as a straight up villain and as Kara said, made some good points, notably that him and Supergirl together would be a wise pairing. He also delivered a lot of comedy, which most villains on this show never do.

Maggie got some good character stuff this week, when it was revealed that her last Valentine’s Day ended in disaster when a girl she liked outed her to her parents, who did not react well. Not only was this good drama for Maggie, who so far hasn’t had the biggest dramatic arc, but it showcased the dichotomy between her and Alex, as Alex’s coming out was much more conventional. It also gave the pair a good resolution, with a touching scene of them making up.

Winn also met Lyra, an alien woman who at first seemed aggressively attracted to him. Winn, to his credit, wanted to pursue a relationship with her and it also highlighted the themes of acceptance this season, as he has no problem crushing on an alien.

And of course, Kara and Mon-El finally kissed in a cool reversal of when he admitted his feelings for her. Also, shout out to the music team for picking Sleeping At Last’s cover of “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” to accentuate the moment.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk” was a fun levity from the last few serious episodes and a romantic one to boot. It was truly enjoyable for a truly offbeat concept, which goes to show how far this show has come.

“Supergirl” airs Mondays on The CW.
